In honor of National Leadership Day, Catawba Valley Health System held a Leadership Appreciation Breakfast to celebrate those that mentor, manage, and motivate their respective departments. In his message to CVHS leadership, Dennis Johnson, CEO, said, “National Leadership Day is celebrated in February each year and it’s my great honor to recognize what I feel is one of the most outstanding groups of leaders I’ve ever worked alongside. Coming to work each day comforts me in an indescribable way knowing that you are doing incredible work for this organization and the patients and families you serve. “I hope you will take a moment to reflect on the impact you have on the ones you lead. The direction you give and the wisdom you share makes a more meaningful impact than you may realize. Our employee satisfaction survey results genuinely reflect that we far outpace other organizations when it comes to employees appreciating and respecting their leaders. “National Leadership Day is about you, and you deserve to be recognized. Not only on this day, but throughout the year. I am humbled and honored to serve with you. Thank you for the way you represent CVHS, your departments, and yourselves.” To learn more about working with the amazing leaders of Catawba Valley Health System, visit https://lnkd.in/gjfq87kQ.
The CVHS Infection Prevention department held a fun patient safety initiative for its Med-Surg division in 2024, the DeCATHlon. The DeCATHlon was a competition focused on prevention of Catheter Associated Urinary Tract Infections (CAUTI), a type of healthcare-associated infection related to indwelling urinary catheters. Six Med-Surg departments collected data for six months, June-November 2024, on things like hand hygiene compliance, knowledge of prevention interventions and implementation of prevention care bundles. In December, the Oncology Unit was announced as the winner of the six-month competition! The department was presented with a trophy to display and T-shirts for each staff member celebrating their accomplishment. “It is important to find fun and innovative ways to engage staff in patient safety and infection prevention. The DeCATHlon was successful in getting staff involved, educating staff on CAUTI prevention techniques and ultimately in preventing CAUTI," said Joelle Calloway, CVHS's Director of Infection Prevention. CVHS is proud to have been named a Top 100 Hospital for Patient Safety by Women's Choice Awards for 2025. It’s initiatives like the DeCATHlon that reinforce our commitment to patient safety and ensure we're providing exceptional healthcare.
Catawba Valley Health System (CVHS) has announced a partnership with Urgent Care of Mountain View (UCMV) to open two new locations in Catawba County. The locations will be in Sherrills Ford and in the Belle Hollow shopping center in the Viewmont section of North Hickory. The Sherrills Ford urgent care, with a target date of opening in early March, will operate out of the existing CVHS facility that currently features its Catawba Valley Family Medicine – Sherrills Ford family practice, although it will be separate from that family practice and feature different hours. The Viewmont location sits beside Fleet Feet Sports in the Belle Hollow shopping center. Urgent Care of Mountain View has been providing fast, affordable, and professional care with a personal touch to the Mountain View community since 2011 and has four existing locations in Hickory, Morganton, Newton, and Taylorsville. Specializing in the treatment of illnesses and injuries, they offer comprehensive Occupational Medicine and Workers' Compensation services including drug screens, X-rays, DOT physicals, TB testing, and more, supporting both small and large businesses alike. “Expansion into Urgent Care is a key piece of our growth strategy,” said Dennis Johnson, CVHS president and CEO. “Urgent Care of Mountain View is the perfect partner because of its sterling reputation for providing fast, efficient and professional care with quality and compassion.” He added that if a patient’s needs go beyond what urgent care provides, Catawba Valley Health System, its medical center and its 24 primary and specialty care practices will partner to provide that extended care. Brian Bechtol, CEO of Urgent Care of Mountain View, said, “We are excited to partner with Catawba Valley Medical Center! Partnering with them will allow urgent care to expand its footprint to meet the better needs of the community in the greater Catawba Valley region." More information about CVHS and UCMV can be found at CatawbaValleyHealth.org and https://lnkd.in/etn5kurw, respectively.

As we embark on a new year, we want to take some time to look back on 2024. Throughout the last 12 months, Catawba Valley Health System has experienced a tremendous amount of growth throughout many areas such as expansion, recruitment, awards and recognitions, and technology. During the last days of this year, we would like to take time to celebrate these achievements with each of you – our patients and staff who have been instrumental in our growth and success.
Catawba Valley Medical Center has been recognized as a Top 100 Hospital in America for Patient Experience by the Women’s Choice Award for 2025. It was one of 10 awards received from that organization. The Women's Choice Award is the only designation that takes into consideration the preferences of women when selecting a hospital. The other nine awards received were for excellence in Bariatric Surgery, Cancer Care, Heart Care, Minimally Invasive Surgery, Obstetrics, Orthopedics, Outpatient Experience, Patient Safety, and Stroke Care. CVMC was awarded 10 awards for 2024 as well, a record number at that time. Michelle Lusk, CVMC’s Chief Nursing Officer, said, “Providing exceptional patient experience through quality, safety and customer service is not only best for patients, but it also results in greater employee morale and satisfaction, thereby reducing turnover and helping recruit top talent. A culture of award-winning patient experience helps keep patients loyal and happy and less likely to change providers or health systems.” She added, “To consider all the awards received for 2025 shows we are delivering amazing care. We’re proud to share these accomplishments with the region we serve.”
