Recently, I worked with a Chief Scientific Officer who was convinced he'd stay at his current company forever. He took my call simply because we had mutual connections. That call led to a dialogue that neither of us expected—one that made him realize there were elements missing in his career.? Today, on National STEM Day, I'm thinking about how my journey in science and neurosurgery continues to shape my approach to executive recruiting. When I transitioned from the clinical world to recruiting, many were surprised, asking, 'Why leave an MD PhD program?' The answer is simple: the core of my work has always been human curiosity, exploration, and the thrill of discovery. Recruiting might look different from medical trials, but the principles are the same. I still experiment, I still analyze, and I still search for patterns. ? At Catalyst Advisors LP a couple of years ago, I worked with a leader in a large pharmaceutical company who was initially resistant to the idea of a new role?in biotech. Through our conversations, I started identifying variables—his drive to innovate, his curiosity, and his desire?cut through layers of process so that he could get to what truly inspired him: leaving a lasting impact?on patients. With each interaction, I saw the chemistry building between him and the role, and eventually, he, too, saw it. Today, he's leading groundbreaking work?that's reshaping the industry. ?
