Google's recent updates to the "site reputation abuse" policy is shaking up the world of digital publishing, and is particularly problematic for freelance journalists. The updated language prohibits content "created by a separate entity" from appearing in search pages, even with publisher oversight. The issue here is, by its definition "separate entities" can include freelancers and content from services and people not employed directly by the host site. We have many friends on the freelance front. These dedicated individuals have always been, and should forever be, vital members of the evolving media landscape and this recent shift raises some major questions: ? Is freelancer experience being undervalued? These writers often bring specialized knowledge, flexibility, and importantly a fresh perspective that staff reporters cannot cover alone. ? What is next for content strategy? The future of journalism depends on a balanced approach - this should embrace freelance contributions while meeting evolving standards for searchable content. While the landscape is changing, the work of freelancers is too important, their voices too valuable, and expertise too irreplaceable to ignore this issue. How should the industry adapt here to help keep the balance?

For over a century, the White House Correspondents’ Association (WHCA) has upheld journalistic integrity by ensuring fair and equal access to the press pool, regardless of political leanings. This system has been a cornerstone of democracy, reinforcing the First Amendment’s guarantee of a free press. Now, the Trump administration has dismantled this tradition, replacing it with a system that handpicks favored journalists while sidelining those who challenge the administration with tough questions. This is not just an internal procedural change—it is a brazen attempt to control the narrative by granting access only to compliant voices and silencing dissenting ones. The implications are dire. When the government decides which journalists are “worthy” of covering it, we inch closer to state-controlled media—something that directly contradicts the fundamental freedoms upon which our democracy is built. This isn’t just an attack on journalists; it’s an attack on every American’s right to access truthful, independent reporting. Press freedom is non-negotiable. The moment we allow any administration—Republican or Democrat—to dictate who gets to hold them accountable, we compromise the foundation of our democracy. Now more than ever, we must stand up for the principles that protect our right to a free and independent press. #FirstAmendment #FreePress #Democracy #JournalismMatters #IWorkinPR

Caster VP Rachel Bradshaw is starting the week with a hot take: if you're selling tranquility, peace, luxury, or even fun, associating your brand with The White Lotus may not be sending quite the right message.
I have a new pop culture obsession, which means I also have a new PR/comms hot take: all the White Lotus brand partnerships are bizarre and depressing. For my Monday meditation practice, I'm reflecting on how brand partnerships reflect and inform the meaning of a piece of media, and why I won't be buying my new end table from CB2's White Lotus collection. #marketing #communications #brandpartnership #PR #publicrelations #iworkinPR #whitelotus

The New York Times officially embracing AI in its newsroom is big step toward AI playing a true role in modern journalism. NYT is committed to figuring out a way to allow media to use AI tools to do their job more effectively, without compromising the coverage or authenticity of the news. As there must be, NYT is setting clear boundaries though - no article drafting, no uploading 3rd party content, no paywall workarounds, and no generative visuals. This measured approach reflects the reality that banning AI altogether simply drives unauthorized use. Thanks to Pete Pachal for sharing this important news. #AI #Media #PR #journalism
If you still had doubts that AI was going to play a major role in newsrooms, The New York Times just erased them. The paper is now officially allowing its journalists to use AI tools for specific tasks—things like generating SEO headlines, summarizing articles, brainstorming ideas, editing, and research, according to a report from SEMAFOR. But there’s a firm no-no list, too: ?? No drafting or major rewriting of articles ?? No uploading copyrighted third-party material ?? No paywall workarounds ?? No generative images or video (except to report on the tech itself) Reporters have a curated toolset to work with, including Google Vertex AI, GitHub Copilot, and a limited version of OpenAI’s API (only with legal approval). The Times also built its own summarization tool, Echo. The Times often gets knocked for being late to trends, but in reality, it’s been an early adopter of new storytelling tech—longform interactives, VR experiments, even an app for reading with gestures. So it’s not too surprising that it’s embracing AI, even while it’s suing OpenAI. AI isn’t just another platform—it’s a foundational shift in knowledge work. The Times sees the risks but also understands that banning AI doesn’t make it go away. Studies show that restrictions just lead to shadow AI—unregulated, unauthorized use. So it’s opening the door. The real test? Whether The Times can keep control of it when the first big AI-related error inevitably happens. But if any newsroom has the standards and policies to pull this off, it’s probably the Gray Lady.
