What a great group of presenters at the Northwest Ecobuilding Guild Building Slam event! Speakers took the stage for 10 minutes each to talk about green building projects. CAST’s Tim Hammer & Natalie Grimm discussed ECHO, a Passive House Designed Certified apartment building in Seattle. And, Matt Hutchins AIA CPHD Hutchins presented the Berm House, a cross-laminated timber common house for a mixed-income community in Washington’s Methow Valley. ? Still time to sign up! ?? The sweeping changes coming to BC’s housing landscape are an exciting shift toward more inclusive and adaptable communities. But with such broad reforms, it’s natural for planners and councils to feel the weight of these new mandates. That’s why it's so valuable to learn from communities who have already navigated similar paths – their experiences can help ease the journey for us all, ultimately leading to more housing solutions. ?? Join us for an insightful session on recent housing policy shifts in Washington State. Small Housing's Andrew Bjorn will guide us through how these changes are being applied on the ground, while Matt Hutchins AIA CPHD from CAST architecture, will share his hands-on experience as a Seattle Planning Commissioner and his work on the “Spokane Six” project under Spokane's innovative new regulations. There's still time to sign up—don’t miss this chance to gain insights that can help BC communities tackle housing challenges more confidently! https://lnkd.in/gUZkHwQB Daniel Winer Elin Headrick, CPSM #housing #britishcolumbia #washington #solutions

As communities across BC and Canada work to bring gentle density to life through federal and provincial initiatives, it’s insightful to look at similar efforts happening south of the border. Join us for a session exploring recent housing policy shifts in Washington State, where communities are adjusting to new state requirements, and developers are pioneering projects that fit within these updated frameworks. Andrew Bjorn from Small Housing will walk us through recent state law changes and how WA communities are implementing them. CAST’s Will Prescott is an International Masonry Institute JBC Masonry Innovation Winner! Prescott, a graduate student studying architecture and landscape architecture at the University of Washington, won for his thesis research “Clayscapes,” which proposes design interventions within each phase of a brick’s lifecycle that encourage circular and sustainable strategies in the construction industry. The project identifies four key areas where the brick industry can achieve circularity to respond to present-day environmental challenges: preservation of existing brick buildings, ecological restoration of former clay mines, alternative brick production composed of unfired regional waste material, and brick construction methods that encourage disassembly and reuse. “Brick is an age-old material that has an amazing opportunity to become something that’s really responsive to the 21st century by embracing a circular economy,” said Prescott. Will's research aligns with CAST's strategies to reduce carbon emissions through the utilization of low-carbon and long-lasting circular materials. #castarchitecture?#architecture?#design?#seattlearchitect #seattlemodernarchitect?#pnwarchitecture #community #masonry #brick #award

I'm proud to share our recent backyard cottage was featured in Fine Homebuilding Magazine! My longtime side-passion has been creating cottage housing and ADUs. Back in 2011, I wanted to leave my job to do a startup. It was remodeling and renting our basement as an ADU as well as my wife's support that allowed my to do my startup (which was later acquired by Google). Ever since, I've been an advocate of gentle density housing. With this home, we had a dream of creating a modern, sustainable take on the classic Tudor style – a house that would feel fresh while fitting right into Seattle's Montlake neighborhood. Our architect Matt Hutchins (CAST architecture) and builder Michael Smith (Align Builders) helped us realize the vision, and we sold the home to a wonderful couple of first-time home buyers. The perfect conclusion to our journey and the beginning of this home's own story. That's why I continue to invest in housing. It gives me a real world satisfaction quite distinct from anything I ever create with technology. You can see more photos of the Blaine cottage here: https://lnkd.in/gicdjZnZ

I'll be talking about the intersection of building code, zoning code, the market and how to align housing policy to achieve abundant housing.

Matt Hutchins addresses the critical issue of “missing middle” housing in the U.S., exploring the housing gap that falls between single-family homes and high-density apartments. Serving as a jury member for the Denver Single-Stair Housing Challenge organized by Buildner, he focuses on innovative solutions to promote accessible, medium-density housing options. https://lnkd.in/gvktQW7p #castarchitecture??#seattledesign?#seattleliving??#seattlearchitect #urbaninfill #housing #missingmiddle #density

Friday, Seattle Mayor Bruce Harrell joined business leaders and developers to sign legislation that waives new development projects in downtown neighborhoods from the full design review process for three years. This plans to increase economic activity and vitality in the city’s center and decrease the amount of time and cost to complete projects. Our Matt Hutchins AIA CPHD, serving on the Seattle Planning Commission, joined the bill signing.
