?? Unlocking the Potential of Smallholder Agroforestry Through Climate Finance ?? How can we ensure that the hundreds of millions of smallholder farmers, responsible for nearly 80% of agricultural production in the Global South, are not left behind by climate finance and can become key players in addressing climate change? At New York Climate Week, the CASH Coalition hosted a panel, "No Smallholder Farmer Left Behind" -- facilitated by Lakshmi Viswanathan (CASH Coalition), and drawing on the insights of John Mundy (One Acre Fund), Emma van de Ven (Rabobank), Ricardo Bayon (Encourage Capital), and Jackson (Jack) Kimani (Climate Action Platform for Africa (CAP-A)) -- to discuss how to leverage climate finance to unlock the potential of smallholder agroforestry. Our latest blog summarizes key takeaways from the panel and dives into the unique challenges of and opportunities for scaling smallholder agroforestry through access to finance. ?? 关于我们
Limiting global warming to 1.5’C requires urgent investments in smallholder regenerative agriculture and climate actions on a massive scale. To roll back climate change and address poverty, we cannot forego the agency, voice, and actions of millions of farming families whose livelihoods depend on ecosystems and the environment. The CASH Coalition is a collaborative initiative working with smallholder farmers and local communities in the Global South. We work to make regenerative agriculture and climate action profitable for smallholders, impart fortitude, agency, and resources to farming communities, and contribute to rehabilitating and preserving the ecosystems and climate conditions on which the world depends. Our deep roots and longstanding, trust-based relationships with land-stewarding communities uniquely position us to create high-quality, nature-based carbon credits that inclusively and directly channel benefits to communities while promoting climate action, poverty mitigation, and sustainable livelihoods at the frontline of climate change.

CASH welcomes the European Council's decision to recommend staggered implementation of the EUDR regulation. As we argued in January, compliance with the original timeline would have been prohibitively expensive for many smallholder producers. While the proposed extension will offer smallholder producers a reprieve, a just transition in the commodities sector will still require investments to help smallholders meet the data collection and traceability obligations of the EUDR. This includes funding for improved connectivity, digital tools, and capacity building to ensure compliance with land tenure and geo-location requirements, particularly in remote areas. https://lnkd.in/enw8HhSG
The CASH Coalition is deeply concerned about the unintended consequences of new EU deforestation regulations on smallholder livelihoods in the Global South. The EUDR jeopardizes smallholders' incomes and market share, and a precarious smallholder transition to regenerative agriculture. A new OpEd published by the Thomson Reuters Foundation and penned by our members Debbie Aung Din (Proximity Designs), Willy Foote (Root Capital), and Phuc To (Forest Trends Association) highlights the stakes for smallholder farmers and advocates for corrective, inclusive actions that ensure our forests and the livelihoods of indigenous and local smallholder producers.

55.6 million trees distributed in 2024... in Kenya alone! Incredible work by One Acre Fund. Feeding farming families and quality soils!
I am excited to share that in Long Rains 2024, we produced and distributed 55.6 Million tree seedlings (forest and fruit) in 34 counties in Kenya. We distributed a total of 28 species both native and exotic. This is the highest number of seedlings produced and distributed in one season. I want to thank my team and everyone who participated in making this great work successful. These seedlings will generate more than 100 million Dollars of impact on smallholder farmers in Kenya. We are now geared toward the next season and preparations are underway to produce and distribute at least 42 million seedlings in the next long rains, March-May 2025. #TupandeKenya #Treeplanting2024 #Tupandemiti

?? Reflecting on #NYClimateWeek 2024 ?? I thought this year’s Climate Week in New York brought renewed urgency and some honest reflections, but it also highlighted a crucial gap: we’re still not going deep enough on the challenges and solutions for food systems transformation, especially when it comes to smallholder farmers. A couple of key takeaways for me: 1?? There are real barriers preventing food systems transformation—especially for smallholders. Climate finance discussions need to be more inclusive, ubiquitous, and consider the unique needs of those most affected by climate change. And be clear eyed at the massive gaps that need to be addressed to support a just transition. Goodwill and good ideas won’t be enough. Lofty food systems transformation goals must also take into account the rigour (and funding) required of implementers to deliver with communities at scale. The CASH Coalition event that was amazingly over subscribed despite a fairly niche discussion on agroforestry and carbon finance, and the Rockefeller Rex Raimond presentation on their excellent regen finance report @ Regenhouse, were glimmers of hope. 2?? Logistical challenges in New York made it difficult to access some of the most relevant events, which unfortunately perpetuates access and equity issues (and meant I was constantly feeling intense fomo). When critical voices are missing from the conversation—particularly those from the global south and smallholder communities—we lose valuable insights into creating more just and inclusive solutions. Lucy Wallace moderated an excellent panel with a range of panelists including farmers (Gerardo Martínez ), financiers (GEF) and enablers (FAO) which was both refreshingly clear eyed and brought a great response from the audience showing lots of appetite for a more inclusive yet diverse range of views across the multiple layers of our sector. More of this please! Too few senior decision makers in key philanthropic organisations were present in these more honest moments however. I also really wish NY would consider holding UNGA, CGI and NYCW separately! Despite these challenges, I try to remain optimistic, but we have to dig deeper and get honest with ourselves about what it takes to make change happen and find the best ways to communicate that change - through the very noisy New York and beyond. #ClimateAction #SmallholderFarmers #ClimateFinance #FoodSystemsTransformation #NYClimateWeek #AccessAndEquity

Thank you to everyone who attended our at-capacity event on the promise, and puzzle, of smallholder agroforestry finance at #ClimateWeekNYC. Particular thanks to our erudite and deeply knowledgeable panelists - John Mundy (One Acre Fund), Emma van de Ven (Acorn Rabobank), Ricardo Bayon (Encourage Capital) and Jackson (Jack) Kimani (Climate Action Platform for Africa (CAP-A)) - and expert moderator, Lakshmi Viswanathan . Thank you too to Matthew Becker for generously facilitating our access to the venue at BDO, and for the logistical support of his team. The session drew on some insights from our agroforestry model, which CASH developed to more systematically understand trade-offs, paths to scale, and options for optimization to make smallholder agroforestry projects successful. Kudos to our colleagues at Climate Action Platform for Africa (CAP-A) for their research modeling the potential livelihood impacts of solar irrigation and agroforestry (in collaboration with another CASH member, One Acre Fund) for smallholder farmers. This is invaluable work and has been essential in developing CASH's agroforestry model. We look forward to further iterations and insights as this critical work continues!
Hundreds of millions of African smallholder farmers (SHF) lead a perilous existence, and are extremely vulnerable to growing climate change impact. At the same time, SHF farming approaches themselves can be part of climate solutions. Recognising, improving, and monetising positive climate impact achieved through climate-smart interventions can yield carbon revenue. Pilots and modelling have shown us that carbon revenue can be catalytic in reaching SHFs – and with a strategic and proactive approach, carbon projects can recognise and reward the climate solutions African SHFs bring to the world, improving livelihoods far beyond the carbon revenue alone.

Rooters around the globe have been celebrating Root Capital's 25th anniversary with Days of Service -- which some of our Cambridge (US) team did today at The Food Project (TFP), a longtime Root partner focused on youth empowerment and healthy local food systems. We rolled up our sleeves, flexed our wheelbarrow muscles, learned more about no-till ag practices, and marveled at the #regenerativeagriculture throughline from our agri-SGB clients in Africa, LatAm and Indonesia to the fields right here in Massachusetts. With thanks to Farmers Asher and Zane and to our host Heath, and a shout out to Root's own founding Board chair, the inimitable Jonathan Rosenthal, who'd recently served as interim CEO at TFP. Wishing you all luck with the rest of the harvest season and with your upcoming Shindig, and grateful for a peer org right here in the Boston area that upholds Root's own Values of Dignity, Local Power, Innovation, Humility, Togetherness, and Tenacity.

Congratulations to our colleagues at Digital Green for their new paper (co-published with Microsoft Research) on scaling AI services for smallholder farmers. Leveraging their open source farmer.chat bot, Digital Green is leading the development of AI in this space and their work is already demonstrating significant potential. Kudos!
?? ?????? ???? ?????????? ?????????????????? ?????????????????????? ?????? ?????????????????????? ?????????????? ?????? ???????? ???? ????????? I'm excited to share "Farmer.Chat: Scaling AI-Powered Agricultural Services for Smallholder Farmers," a research paper I had the pleasure of co-authoring, is now live. Collaborating with Microsoft Research, and led by Vineet Singh, Dr. Namita Singh and other colleagues at #DigitalGreen, we have been exploring some critical questions: 1?? ?????????????????????? ?????? ??????????????????????????: How can generative AI enhance the reach and relevance of agricultural advisory services in real-world, low-resource environments? 2?? ???????????????? ??????????: What factors foster trust and sustained engagement with AI? What makes farmers return to these tools? How can we ensure these tools are free of bias? 3?? ????????-?????????? ????????????: What's the tangible effect of AI on farming practices and productivity, especially within rural communities? Our early results dig into in-app data, user interviews, and focus group discussions show some promising results: ? 15,000+ extension agents and farmers served ? 300,000+ queries answered ??75% success rate in providing timely, localized farming advice But we're also confronting some sticky challenges. Trust—particularly among women and farmers with limited literacy for example—is a crucial hurdle. We need to continue to tackle ethical concerns like inclusivity, bias, and equitable access. Increasing uptake also not just about improving the accuracy of responses— instead AI-enabled advice needs to resonate with lived human experiences, and a lot more work needs to be done to get highly relevant, tailored advice across millions of unique farming contexts. ?? Read the full paper: https://lnkd.in/gB7MBTh9 ?? Try out Farmer.Chat: https://lnkd.in/dfCdJpCb So, how do we design AI tools that are both inclusive and trustworthy? How can we identify and mitigate underlying biases to ensure these technologies deliver real value?
