I had the incredible opportunity to participate in Advocacy Day in Albany for the first time and to meet with a Senator’s Chief of Staff to push for much-needed change. A huge thank you to Senator Shelley B. Mayer’s Chief of Staff for not only listening but truly understanding the urgency of the issues we raised; family expenses, low salaries, housing, and even the challenges of accessing daycare. Her commitment to investing in human services, including supporting the 7.8% funding increase, gives me hope for the future of our sector. Advocacy matters. These conversations matter. CASES helped over 1,800 New Yorkers complete an alternative to incarceration program last year. What does that mean for individuals, families, and communities? ?? More parents tucking their kids in at night, instead of being separated by prison walls. ?? More employees showing up for work, contributing to their families and the economy. ?? More people securing stable housing instead of cycling through jails, hospitals and shelters. ?? More individuals receiving mental health and substance use treatment that addresses root causes. ?? More second chances that turn into new beginnings. Justice should be about accountability and opportunity—not punishment for punishment’s sake. Under Patricia’s leadership, CASES' IMT teams provide lifesaving, mobile, wraparound care for people facing serious mental illness, housing instability, criminal legal system involvement, and other barriers to success. These teams deliver consistent, compassionate, community-based support—from psychiatric care and medication management to housing assistance and peer services—ensuring that people get help when and where they need it most. CASES CEO Jonathan McLean is a member of the Independent Rikers Commission, a group of city leaders tasked with creating the blueprint for a safer and more just NYC.
