Osservatorio Balcani e Caucaso Transeuropa published its PR today ?? This is yet another instance in a troubling pattern where Eni uses legal threats to silence those speaking out in the public interest, including activists, journalists, and whistleblowers. Jusan Technologies Limited has dropped its two-year libel case initiated due to TBIJ's article called “Kazakh ex-dictator used UK company to help protect his $8 billion business empire”. The article is still online and remains crucial reading. ?? CASE Coalition has previously designated the lawsuit as a #SLAPP and published a testimony from the staff discussing the case and its toll on their work and well-being. ?? The CASE Coalition has classified two lawsuits lodged by Judge Du?anka ?or?evi? against Serbian investigative media outlet KRIK as SLAPPs. The judge is seeking financial compensation, an occupational ban for KRIK journalists and prison sentences. While KRIK journalists routinely face legal threats due to their investigative work, this case represents an unprecedented attempt to pressure independent media. What is particularly concerning is that these lawsuits are initiated by a judge, who is supposed to uphold the rule of law, not use the legal system for personal needs. This case highlights the urgent need for clear guidelines for judges and lawyers to identify and avoid SLAPPs, as such actions undermine their professional principles. CASE is set to release a resource on legal ethics to help lawyers and judges recognize and prevent abusive litigation. Stay tuned! ? (Croatian Forests Ltd, CFL) is a state-owned company managing forests and forest land owned by Croatia ???? . The company has issued three private prosecutions for criminal defamation against Vesna Grgi? who is a seasoned environmental activist and heads the Green Squad, a group that advocates against massive deforestation in Croatia. In our view, a state-owned company bringing three private prosecutions against an individual activist is an unnecessary and disproportionate measure, especially given the numerous other options available to challenge the criticism without resorting to criminal speech prosecution. CASE Coalition has classified Shell’s lawsuit against Greenpeace UK as a #SLAPP. The giant oil company demands that Greenpeace halt all peaceful protests at its infrastructure worldwide, threatening around a million in damages, with legal costs that could spiral into millions more. We call on Shell to withdraw the claim and stop pressuring civil society actors who advocate for protecting the planet and amplifying industrial damage to the environment.
