My [potentially] hot take on the rise of Chief AI Officer roles in the GenAI era…
In the 2010s, many organizations introduced #ChiefInnovationOfficers (CInOs) to drive innovation across business units. Yet despite good intentions, these roles often struggled to deliver meaningful value. Why? Too frequently, they operated outside the core organizational structure, resulting in a disconnect between the CInO’s initiatives and the company’s actual operational and customer needs. The result? Disruption that failed to produce measurable business outcomes—such as revenue growth or cost reduction—and often created friction rather than progress.
Now, as the #ChiefAIOfficer (CAIO) title gains momentum, we should take a moment to reflect on those lessons. While a CAIO can bring strategic focus to AI efforts, the risks of misalignment are real if the role is not seamlessly integrated into the existing organizational framework.
What’s a better approach? Companies should prioritize three things:

--> Attract AI-savvy product leaders, engineers, and technical experts at all levels—both managers and individual contributors.
2?? ?? Fostering Genuine Executive Engagement...
--> Encourage senior leaders to directly engage with their AI SMEs, rather than relying solely on a single leadership position to drive AI strategy. This ensures that AI initiatives remain connected to the realities of day-to-day operations and produce measurable business impact.
3?? ?? Adopting a Partner-First Approach...
--> Focus on partnering with best-in-class AI platform vendors, strategic and co-development partners. These orgs bring the full scope of AI expertise to build and maintain scalable solutions; internal IT functions aren't positioned to be AI software shops -- failure here is certain. Instead, ensure your internal AI SMEs are deeply embedded into business units WHILE actively interfacing with co-dev/vendor partners.

Success in AI doesn’t come from adding another executive title. It comes from investing in the right talent and creating processes that embed AI expertise deeply into core operations.
