Even with health insurance, many older adults will have problems affording long-term care, according to a new study from the Center for Retirement Research at Boston College. ? “Retirees face the risk of a large healthcare spending shock for medical or long-term care (LTC) either because their health insurance involves significant cost sharing or because they lack insurance entirely in the case of LTC,” the researchers found. “Even with supplemental insurance to augment?Medicare, cost-sharing for doctor and hospital services typically involves some copay or coinsurance.” ? Healthcare providers and accountable care organizations (ACOs) can partner to create effective palliative care models for patients, but it requires true collaboration. ? ACOs need help managing expensive occurrences such as unplanned hospitalizations and emergency department visits. Partnering with palliative care providers can reduce those costs. ? Hospitals are looking for post-acute care providers to partner with in a new mandatory Medicare payment demonstration. ? The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services finalized the Transforming Episode Accountability Model (TEAM) last year. It takes effect in 2026 and runs for five years. It sets payments for 30-day episodes of care for a number of procedures. ? Between 20% and 60% of spending associated with these procedures happens after patients leave hospitals, giving health systems an incentive to collaborate with nursing homes and other post-acute providers. ? Many of the COVID-19 prevention measures implemented at skilled nursing facilities lacked solid evidence of effectiveness, according to a new study in JAMA Health Forum. ? The research found that nursing homes accounted for 31% of U.S. COVID deaths in 2020 and that many of the preventive measures, such as visitor restrictions, isolation practices and ventilation modifications, had little evidence supporting their effectiveness. ? The study also found that proven pharmaceutical interventions, particularly vaccines and antiviral treatments, were significantly underutilized. By December 2023, only 33% of nursing home residents had up-to-date Covid-19 vaccination status. ? Cascala Health CEO, Matt A. Murphy, offers his perspective on the proliferation of internal-IT-led AI initiatives, in healthcare and beyond...
My [potentially] hot take on the rise of Chief AI Officer roles in the GenAI era… In the 2010s, many organizations introduced #ChiefInnovationOfficers (CInOs) to drive innovation across business units. Yet despite good intentions, these roles often struggled to deliver meaningful value. Why? Too frequently, they operated outside the core organizational structure, resulting in a disconnect between the CInO’s initiatives and the company’s actual operational and customer needs. The result? Disruption that failed to produce measurable business outcomes—such as revenue growth or cost reduction—and often created friction rather than progress. Now, as the #ChiefAIOfficer (CAIO) title gains momentum, we should take a moment to reflect on those lessons. While a CAIO can bring strategic focus to AI efforts, the risks of misalignment are real if the role is not seamlessly integrated into the existing organizational framework. What’s a better approach? Companies should prioritize three things: 1?? ?? Developing Strong Talent Pipelines... --> Attract AI-savvy product leaders, engineers, and technical experts at all levels—both managers and individual contributors. 2?? ?? Fostering Genuine Executive Engagement... --> Encourage senior leaders to directly engage with their AI SMEs, rather than relying solely on a single leadership position to drive AI strategy. This ensures that AI initiatives remain connected to the realities of day-to-day operations and produce measurable business impact. 3?? ?? Adopting a Partner-First Approach... --> Focus on partnering with best-in-class AI platform vendors, strategic and co-development partners. These orgs bring the full scope of AI expertise to build and maintain scalable solutions; internal IT functions aren't positioned to be AI software shops -- failure here is certain. Instead, ensure your internal AI SMEs are deeply embedded into business units WHILE actively interfacing with co-dev/vendor partners. ?? My POV ?? Success in AI doesn’t come from adding another executive title. It comes from investing in the right talent and creating processes that embed AI expertise deeply into core operations. ??? For a deeper dive into the evolving role of Chief AI Officers in healthcare, check out David Chou's recent Forbes article: Is a Chief AI Officer Essential for Healthcare or Just Another Title? ?? ? What do you think? How can organizations most effectively integrate AI into their structures and strategies? ?? ? #AIinHealthcare #TalentStrategy #InnovationLeadership #CorporateInnovation #CIO #CAIO #GenAI

A comprehensive federal policy regulating healthcare AI is unlikely this year, according to experts, but there will be additional activity at the state level and through industry groups. Modern Healthcare reports that while most in the industry acknowledge a need for a national healthcare AI policy, the new Congress and administration are unlikely to deliver. Without federal action, tech companies, health systems and others are forming organizations to draw up guidelines and best practices. Brock E.W. Turner has the story: https://lnkd.in/g534Xv35 I #HealthTech #HealthcareAI #HealthcareInnovation #AIRegulation
