This year, as I celebrate another trip around the sun today December 10th, which also happens to be?International Human Rights Day, I’m reflecting on what matters most to me: the dignity, safety, and well-being of immigrant victims of domestic violence, sexual abuse, and other violent crimes in our community. This year, for my birthday, I’m asking for your support. A donation to CasaLuz isn’t just a gift to me—it’s a commitment to standing with immigrants when they need it most. Together, we can continue to be the lifeline that many families rely on. To donate, please follow the link in the CasaLuz post below. Thank you for celebrating this special day with me by supporting a cause so close to my heart. Your generosity makes all the difference. With love and gratitude, Inés Negrette Founder & Executive Director CasaLuz

This December, we celebrate?Human Rights Month?and honor?International Human Rights Day?on December 10th—a day that is especially meaningful to us at CasaLuz. Not only does it symbolize the universal fight for dignity and justice, but it’s also the birthday of our incredible founder and executive director,?Inés Negrette. For years, Inés has been a fierce advocate for immigrant victims of violent crimes, tirelessly reminding the world of one simple truth: immigrants are human beings deserving of love, freedom, respect, a life without violence, and the opportunity to thrive. A new law effective 07/01/2024, TN HB2124/SB2576 requires law enforcement agencies to communicate with ICE (U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement), regarding?any individual?they encounter, without exception.?Locally,?immigrant victims are more scared than ever to report crimes, leaving them at greater risk and feeling stuck in the claws of violence, vulnerable and underserved. Without their collaboration, there will be no progress in prosecuting cases, no accountability for criminals, and our communities will be less safe. In these uncertain times, with a new administration taking office and federal funding under threat, the work we do is more critical than ever. Every day, CasaLuz fights for families seeking safety, stability, and hope. But we can’t do it without you. On this International Human Rights Day—and in honor of Inés’ birthday—we invite you to stand with us. Make a gift to CasaLuz today?to show that no matter the challenges ahead, we remain united in defending the rights of every human being. Together, we can continue to build a world where immigrants are seen, heard, and valued. Founder/Executive Director-CasaLuz-The only culturally specific agency serving Hispanic victims of violent crimes

Many thanks to Amaia Iratzoqui, Associate Professor at the University of Memphis for inviting me to present to her criminal justice class. The presentation shows my journey as a Latina/Immigrant in the South advocating for Hispanic/Latinx victims of domestic violence and other violent crimes in the Memphis/Shelby County area. I shared some of the many challenges, injustices, resistance, retaliation, and threats I faced and continue facing, how I prepared and dealt with them, and how against all the odds my determination brought positive changes in policing to improve access for Hispanic/Immigrant victims. A journey where many of the initial adversaries transformed into allies to work together on behalf of vulnerable crime victims. It was truly an honor to share insights on such a vital and complex topic. The opportunity to discuss how discrimination, bias, and systemic barriers intersect with the lived experiences of immigrant victims allowed me to shed light on the critical need for culturally competent advocacy. Your student's questions and engagement highlighted their dedication to understanding and addressing these issues in meaningful ways. Your commitment to fostering an educational space where these conversations can thrive is both inspiring and essential. Thank you for providing a platform to amplify these voices and for encouraging the next generation of criminal justice professionals to approach their work with cultural sensitivity and compassion. Thank you again, Dr. Amaia Iratzoqui for this meaningful opportunity!

?? CasaLuz is celebrating 9 years of empowering survivors! ?? Since 2015, CasaLuz has proudly served the Hispanic/Latinx community in Memphis and Shelby County, providing critical support for victims of sexual assault, domestic violence, and other violent crimes. Over the years, we’ve been able to assist hundreds of survivors like Mariela*, who found safety, legal advocacy, and the courage to rebuild her life with our help. Read Mariela's story here: https://lnkd.in/gYB7WmsR As we celebrate this milestone, the need for our services continues to grow. Our waiting list is longer than ever, and we’re reaching out to our community for support to ensure no one is turned away. ?? Your donation can make a difference: - Help a young woman secure a restraining order and receive counseling - Provide a week’s worth of groceries and diapers for a mother of four - Ensure a victim has safe transportation to and from court By giving just $18.00 a month, you can provide essential support, such as baby formula for a family in need. Every gift helps change a life. As we reflect on 9 years of impact, we invite you to join us in continuing the fight for justice and healing. Together, we can build a future free from violence. ?? Founder/Executive Director-CasaLuz-The only culturally specific agency serving Hispanic victims of violent crimes

Celebrating CasaLuz's 9th Anniversary! Today we celebrate a milestone but also honor the courage, resilience, and tireless work of CasaLuz's staff, board of directors, and its amazing supporters. From its humble beginnings, CasaLuz has been on a mission to serve those who need it most. We have faced countless challenges along the way, but as we stand here today, we celebrate the fact that we have thrived against all the odds. Why? Because we dared. We dared to speak up when others remained silent. We dared to fight for justice when the fight was not easy. Most of all, we dared to provide care and compassion to vulnerable Hispanic/Immigrant victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, and other violent crimes when others looked away. Today, we remember and honor the victims we have served — those whose stories were silenced by violence, those who faced discrimination and isolation. We recognize the strength it took for them to seek help, and we are here to reaffirm our commitment to supporting every single one of them, no matter what. But let us also reflect on the reality we face serving underserved victims is not a task without challenges. In a world that sometimes turns a blind eye to those who suffer in silence, we knew the fight would be hard. Our resources have often been stretched thin, and support from our local community has not always been easy to come by. Yet here we are, because of the determination of the CasaLuz’s team, and people who stood by our side and refused to give up. When doors were shut, we knocked harder. When voices were silenced, we spoke louder. We reported discrimination, biases, Civil Rights violations even when it was inconvenient because that’s what justice demands. And we will continue to report it. We will continue to expose injustice wherever it exists because no victim should be denied the dignity, respect, or safety they deserve. Today, let’s celebrate our achievements. Let’s celebrate the lives we have changed and the hope we have restored. Together, we will continue to break barriers, shatter silence, and bring light to the darkest of places. Together, we will keep moving forward, undeterred by the challenges in our path, inspired by the strength of the victims we serve, and motivated by our unwavering commitment to justice. As we look toward the future, let’s remember: We are not alone. Each of you has played a part in this journey. Your support has been our lifeline. Your belief in our mission has fueled our fire. And because of you, we will continue to thrive, continue to serve, and continue to dare — to dare to make the world a better place for the victims who need us. Thank you for being part of this incredible journey. Let’s celebrate what we have achieved, and let’s commit to even greater success in the years ahead. Happy Anniversary, CasaLuz! Here’s to many more years of courage, compassion, and justice.
