Nine years ago, Todd met Jose* through Casa Chirilagua’s mentorship program. What began as weekly meetings to help with homework and teach Jose how to ride a bike has grown into something truly extraordinary—a bond that feels more like family. “I would never have thought that we would still be together after all these years,” says Todd. Casa made a perfect match!” From swimming lessons and science fair projects to participating in mentor program outings like their recent trip to the SPY Museum, Todd and Jose have shared countless meaningful moments. Today they’re talking about driving permits and Jose’s post-high school options. For Todd, the greatest reward has been seeing Jose thrive—growing in confidence, learning new skills, and embracing his potential. "We’ve both gained so much from what started as a mentorship," shares Todd. "I think we would now consider that we are part of each other’s family.” Time and commitment create stories like Todd and Jose's. When Haydee and her husband Jose first came to Casa Chirilagua, they were looking for academic assistance for their oldest daughter. They never expected to find a community that would support and strengthen their entire family. Originally from El Salvador, they’ve lived in the Chirilagua neighborhood for 11 years and are now raising three daughters, ages 10, 7, and 2. “Casa is an amazing place for us parents because we know our kids are getting help and having experiences that we aren’t able to provide,” Haydee shares. For her, Casa Chirilagua is more than an after-school program; it’s a second home where her daughters feel safe and supported. They are flourishing, growing in confidence, and experiencing new opportunities. “One thing I like about the program, apart from the help they get with their homework, is that they get outdoors, go on field trips, exercise, and play,” adds Haydee. But Casa Chirilagua’s impact goes beyond the students we serve. It’s also a place for parents to connect, develop leadership skills, grow spiritually, and feel empowered to give back to the community. Haydee is currently enrolled in our ESL (English as a Second Language) classes, offered by our school partner, and serves on our parent leadership committee, Directiva. Through her involvement, she is learning new skills and helping guide other families, creating ripples of positive change that reach beyond her own family. Haydee’s story is just one example of how Casa Chirilagua partners with families to create lasting change.
