What does the term "basic needs" mean in higher education? It encompasses essential supports such as food, housing, and financial aid that are critical for student success. As financial pressures on students continue to grow, many are facing challenges that go beyond tuition—struggling to afford food, secure housing, or access necessary public benefits. Addressing these basic needs gaps is increasingly important for student success, retention, and overall well-being. CAS’s Basic Needs Standards and Self-Assessment Guide offer institutions a framework for providing effective support and closing these gaps. Three in five students experience some type of basic needs insecurity while in college. Not only do we need to build an ecosystem of support for college students, but we need to ensure those efforts are strategic, evidence-informed, and sustainable. The Basic Needs standards, with a revised structure and rating scale, provide individuals and institutions with the means for implementing new programs and assessing program and service effectiveness. Panelists will discuss the process behind the creation of the basic needs standards, what it looks like to implement them, and how campuses can get started. Panelists: - Raymond Plaza, PhD, Director of the Office for Diversity and Inclusion, Santa Clara University - Jacen Greene, MBA, Assistant Director of Homelessness Research and Action Collaborative, Portland State University - Warren Anderson, EdD; Vice President for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion; Bradley University - Jason Vlastaras, Director of Campus Recreation, Texas State University Moderator: Anne E. Highlighting terms from the CAS glossary: Best Practice is a phrase used to refer to a method, approach, or program that is thought to represent a widely accepted and exemplary approach to enacting work within a functional area. The term can also be an indicator of an aspirational level of achievement; CAS standards are not intended to represent best practices except in the sense that they are identified through a widely-informed development and consensus process; they instead represent a threshold of good practice that is meant to be essential and achievable across settings.
