Scholar Spotlight! Community service has always been a significant part of, 3-time Carson Scholar, Sunny Chen's life. She first started volunteering as a Girl Scout at just 7 years old, picking up trash in her neighborhood and packing food for students in need at local schools. Today, Sunny attends The Madeira School, where she has the opportunity to meet people from around the world. By the end of her freshman year, she decided to channel her passion for service into creating a community service club that would unite her peers and give back—particularly to the community where she grew up. Sunny founded the club "Snails Prevail" in 2022, inspired by the school’s mascot, the mighty snail. Since its inception, the club has grown to include over 100 members and has formed meaningful partnerships with organizations such as Women Giving Back, Backpack Buddies, and A Forever Home. Sunny finds it incredibly rewarding to introduce many of her peers, some of whom had never volunteered before, to the joy and importance of community service. Sunny’s dedication to service has earned her the prestigious Presidential Volunteer Service Award for two consecutive years. Outside of her volunteer work, Sunny is a competitive swimmer with the Nation’s Capital Swim Club, demonstrating her commitment to excellence in both academics and athletics. She looks forward to continuing to grow Snails Prevail and making an even greater impact in the future.
关于我们
The Carson Scholars Fund, Inc. was founded in 1994 to address the education crisis in the United States. When world-renowned Johns Hopkins Pediatric Neurosurgeon Benjamin S. Carson, M.D. and his wife, Candy, read a research study about education in the United States, they were alarmed by the findings. The study showed that our nation’s students ranked #21 out of 22 countries; next to the bottom of the list in science and math. The Carsons felt compelled to take action. Carson Scholarships are awarded to students in grades 4-11 who exemplify academic excellence and humanitarian qualities. Winners receive a $1,000 scholarship to go toward their college education, along with a recognition package, and an invitation to attend an awards banquet. The Ben Carson Reading Project provides funding to schools to build and maintain Ben Carson Reading Rooms – warm, inviting libraries where kids can escape into the world of books. The Carson Scholars Fund believes that if children can be taught early to excel, they will stay motivated and have a higher chance of educational success later in life.

We’re looking for passionate individuals to help judge applications, assist with banquets, and support our mission of recognizing young scholars. Volunteering with the CSF not only makes a difference in the lives of students but can also have positive effects on your own well-being. Did you know that volunteering is linked to slower aging? A recent study from the Brown School at Washington University in St. Louis, found that helping others can lead to better mental and physical health as you age! Whether you're interested in supporting our events or guiding the application process, your time and effort will help us continue to inspire and empower future leaders. Get involved today – make a lasting impact and feel great while doing it! #MakeADifference https://lnkd.in/e3rbcCJG

A reading room is more than just a cozy place to read. It’s designed to spark innovative and aspirational thinking in young children. This space encourages students to think for themselves and explore a world of possibilities through the pages of a book. Pat Davis was one of those students who found inspiration in his school’s Ben Carson Reading Room. So moved by how that space impacted his life, Pat wrote a letter to our co-founder, Dr. Ben Carson. https://lnkd.in/ejgEsEuu
