Surgery is invasive, expensive and time-intensive including recovery time. So why would anyone go through unnecessary risk and bear high costs? Yet, thousands of patients did just that. Over the past three years, Medicare and Medicare Advantage members received over 200,000 UNNECESSARY back surgeries, costing almost $2 billion dollars - that’s an awful lot of invasive procedures that turned out to NOT be appropriate! But they happened. 14% of spinal fusions and laminectomies to relieve pressure on the spinal cord, and 11% of vertebroplasty procedures for patients with osteoporosis related spinal fractures were deemed to be overuse or unnecessary, per recent research. Thanks to Tina Reed at Axios for shining a light on the all-too-common practice of unnecessary surgeries. This is why it’s so important to ensure we incentivize our providers to focus on value over volume, and to only recommend surgery when it’s appropriate. This is Carrum’s raison d’être. Our providers will tell you if a procedure is necessary, and if it’s not, we still reimburse them for their time evaluating the case, so we eliminate misaligned incentives that encourage more procedures versus only appropriate procedures.
