This week's #WHM spotlight is on Irene Soloway! Soloway helped increase women's membership in the trades. She testified and wrote letters to express the importance of a level playing field in the workforce. - In October 1980, Soloway wrote a letter in support of the United Tradeswomen’s attempt to establish an official women’s committee within the New York City District Council of Carpenters (NYDCC). - In April 1990, Soloway and other carpenters appeared before the New York City Commission on Human Rights to testify on gender and race relations in the NYDCC.

We’re celebrating women’s history in the union trades! Here are some notable #WHM2025 moments in UBC history: - Delegates voted to accept women as associate members of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters in 1916 after the boxmakers union merged with the UBC. - Women officially became recognized members of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters in 1935. - By 1957, 9,000 women were union carpenters. - The Sisters in the Brotherhood Committee was formed in 1998 and the first conference was held in 2002. Today, 6% of all union carpenters are women.

The Carpenter Contractor Trust, in partnership with Maplewoodshop and New Jersey Eastern Atlantic States Regional Council of Carpenters Technical Center hosted the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Coastal & Northern New Jersey on Saturday Feb 22nd to discuss opportunities in the carpenters union and completed a hands-on carpentry project.

Rosina Corrothers Tucker is our final Black History Month feature. She worked alongside A. Philip Randolph to assist with establishing the BSCP. She also formed the International Ladies’ Auxiliary Order in the BSCP. - Rosina Corrothers Tucker organized workers in the laundry trades and domestic service industries, fought for racial and economic justice as part of the March on Washington, and lobbied Congress for labor and education reforms. - Tucker helped establish the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters (BSCP), the nation’s first predominantly Black labor union. - Tucker also helped to establish the International Ladies’ Auxiliary Order in the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters.
