Reinhard Stolle joined us at Bosch Research in #Pittsburgh today for the CBI@RTC Seminar series. Dr. Stolle is the Deputy Director of the Fraunhofer IKS and spoke about engineering safe systems with AI. He described two perspectives of safety engineering for AI-enabled systems: a safety-centric one and an AI-centric one. He explained the approach of combining the best of those two worlds to build systems that use the functional power of today's spectacular AI innovations without sacrificing safety goals. Their model of "continuous safety engineering for high-risk AI systems" explicitly models uncertainties and strengths and propagates these during design time and operation time. Our very own Industry Mentor and Carnegie Mellon University alum was featured by Bosch Research as an #expert! Go Jonathan Francis! Carnegie Mellon University School of Computer Science, Carnegie Mellon University Robotics Institute, Bosch USA #pittsburgh #cmu #bosch #research #robotics
My name is Jonathan Francis, and I work at the intersection of AI and robotics. As a Senior Research Scientist at Bosch Research Pittsburgh, I focus on developing intelligent autonomous systems that can learn and adapt in real-world environments. My expertise combines Multimodal Machine Learning and Robot Learning, with an emphasis on creating reliable systems for industrial automation. ? In addition to my role at Bosch, I am an Adjunct Staff / Area Expert of Robotics in the Carnegie Bosch Institute, at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU), and a Sponsored Scientist in the Robotics Institute at CMU. I enjoy collaborating on research, mentoring PhD students, and leading multi-institutional projects to help advance the field. ? My goal is to develop autonomous systems that can handle complex tasks and improve themselves over time. By combining research with practical applications, I aim to contribute to the future of robotics in industry. ?
