Today we celebrate the opening of Oak Street Village. Designed by CHA, the new shelter community provides individual sleeping pods for up to 40 adults, with accessibility features. As Portland and Multnomah County continue working to expand shelter capacity, Oak Street Village is an important step forward. Proud to see this project come to life in partnership with Reyes Engineering, Inc., Buildskape, and Janet Turner Engineering, LLC https://lnkd.in/gDiWyyC4 #designforcommunity #sheltercommunity #accessibledesign #architectsinpdx

  • Applications for this year’s Architecture Foundation of Oregon scholarships are open until February 23rd, 2025. To receive tips on preparing a successful application and feedback on work samples, register to attend the in-person Portland Workshop session at CHA on Wednesday, February 19th from 5.30 to 7.00pm. The William Hart Scholarship is among those being awarded this year and was established in 2021. The scholarship honors William "Bill" Hart's legacy at CHA. Although Bill left the firm in 2021 to focus on development work, CHA continues to push for equity in the profession and in the communities we serve. Through this scholarship we hope to expand that work, remove barriers to entry into the profession, and support future architects. This annual scholarship is available to BIPOC graduate, or undergraduate students enrolled at University of Oregon or Portland State University who are in the final year of their architecture program. https://lnkd.in/gTjaG3t9 #architecturescholarships #scholarshipsinpdx #carletonhartworkshop

Thank you for trusting us to bring your visions to life. Here's to another years of creativity, innovation, and growth. We can't wait to see where this year takes us.

  • ??? This season, Carleton Hart Architecture is proud to support the Ronald McDonald House and their Holiday Toy Drive. For the thousands of children that stay with them every year, a new toy can go a long way in making them feel at home while traveling for medical care or during stressful situations. ????

  • Applications are open! ? The William Hart Scholarship was established in 2021 in partnership with Carleton Hart Architecture (CHA) and the Architecture Foundation of Oregon (AFO). Hart’s resume reflects his passion for community-oriented projects that are sensitive to historically under-represented and marginalized stakeholders, including multiple affordable housing developments and community centers across the Portland Metro Area and SW Washington. Hart stepped into a new role in March 2021 to found Hart Development – a real estate development firm focused on serving the African American community. ? To honor Hart’s enduring legacy that lives on in CHA, the firm continues to push for equity in the profession and the communities they serve. The vision for this scholarship is to expand that work, remove barriers to entry into the profession, and support future architects. ? This scholarship is also an opportunity for students to engage with CHA. Scholarship recipients will be invited to visit the CHA office and meet staff with the hope of forming an ongoing relationship with the firm. While optional, involvement with the firm is meant to offer support and professional mentorship to recipients of this award. ? AFO and CHA encourage Oregon architecture students who identify as Black, Indigenous, and/or a person of color to apply for the William Hart Scholarship. An essay and portfolio of work must represent the candidate’s career goals and desire to make a positive impact on the architecture profession. ? • As part of a larger expansion project for the City of Portland's Bureau of Environmental Services (BES), CHA led the design of two buildings to improve non-process facilities at the wastewater treatment plant. The maintenance and operations building will provide approximately 11,000 sq. ft. of shop space, staff locker/shower rooms, administrative office/conference spaces and an employee lunchroom/kitchen area. A separate storage building will provide approximately 3,000 sq. ft. of equipment and materials storage space. ? CHA worked closely with the BES leadership, stakeholders and user groups to envision an inclusive design and modernized facilities that meet the demands of round-the-clock work that the BES plant staff provides. Many thanks to our consultant team's continued efforts and to Jacobs for their leadership throughout the project.

  • Carleton Hart Architecture celebrates the diversity of thoughts, ideals, values, and life experiences that enrich our nation. At the same time, we must also acknowledge the harm caused by the divisiveness and hateful rhetoric that has surfaced during this election. Considering our recent election results, CHA recognizes that many of us feel a sense of regression—and even dread—as we consider our collective future.? ? As each of us takes the time to process our emotions and our fears, we will continue the ongoing fight for justice, equity, and compassion in our society. CHA remains steadfast in our mission to partner with those working to end housing insecurity and build inclusive, welcoming, and vibrant communities. This mission, and our partnerships, have never been more crucial. We deeply appreciate the trust our clients and neighbors place in us and are forever inspired by them in our collective pursuit of a just society.?

November is National Native American Heritage Month! A month to celebrate the rich histories, vibrant traditions and cultural contributions of Native American communities across the United States. At CHA, we acknowledge that the Portland Metro Area was historically home to several Indigenous communities, including the Multnomah, Wasco, Cowlitz, Kathlamet, Clackamas, Bands of Chinook, Tualatin, Kalapuya, Molalla, and many other tribes who made their homes along the Columbia River. There are more than 380 different Tribes represented in the metro area today. As a firm, we approach our work with these communities with respect and strive to learn from their histories, cultures, and ways of life to create beautiful, restorative and meaningful architecture. CHA has been honored to collaborate with and learn from NAYA Family Center over the past 12 years. Together we've completed four housing communities, with a fifth currently under construction. We look forward to many more successful projects in the years to come. Looking for ways to celebrate Native American Heritage Month? Shop at Native-owned businesses, watch a Native film, educate yourself on Oregon's nine federally recognized tribes, visit local museum like the Oregon Historical Society and the Portland Art Museum's Native American art exhibits or join NAYA at their annual UnThanksgiving Event.
