The Levin Center for Oversight and Democracy was established to carry on the legislative oversight legacy and public vision of U.S. Senator Carl Levin, who represented Michigan in the U.S. Senate for 36 years, longer than any other Michigan senator. The Levin Center is headquartered at Wayne State University Law School in Detroit with an office in Washington, D.C. The Levin Center works to build capacity in legislative bodies at all levels — federal, state, and abroad — to expose public and private sector abuses, ensure effective governance, and bring critical facts to light for the benefit of all. The Levin Center has developed a reputation as a leader in this area by helping to train congressional staff from both parties on how to conduct bipartisan, fact-based oversight; organizing workshops on legislative oversight for states and foreign countries; conducting and supporting research on important issues; and educating future leaders about the value and practice of legislative oversight. The Center is working to inspire and train a new generation in the techniques of bipartisan, fact-based oversight to ensure public and private institutions operate with integrity, transparency, and accountability. A principal goal of the Levin Center is to reestablish and strengthen America’s public square to promote civil discourse, good governance, and a shared appreciation for and understanding of relevant facts. Through its research, convenings, and educational programs, the Levin Center enables the public to see whether and how their elected leaders are collaborating to build consensus on vital problems and solutions.

The Levin Center is excited to announce the release of new classroom resources that include six new inquiry-based lessons, four video resources, and four stand-alone Snapshots that explore key periods in U.S. history and concepts in civics. The?Learning by Hearings?(LbH) materials were created by educational professionals in the Levin Center’s civic education team. Our?LbH?education resources use the lens of legislative oversight to enable students to take the lead in the classroom by inviting them to ask questions, interrogate materials, and interpret history from their own point of view. https://lnkd.in/eNNUdjgY

Today, the Levin Center for Oversight and Democracy has announced Professor Jonathan Shaub as the 2024 recipient of the Levin Center Award for Excellence in Oversight Research for his outstanding paper “Common Law Executive Privilege(s).” Shaub is a professor at University of Kentucky J. David Rosenberg College of Law. With this award, the Levin Center recognizes critical research into oversight issues at every level – national, state, local, and international. Professor Shaub’s paper examines two pivotal 1974 Supreme Court cases and explores how these cases have shaped the executive branch’s interpretation of executive privilege over the past fifty years, with a focus on congressional oversight and information disclosure. Professor Shaub will present his award-winning paper and engage in a discussion and Q&A session during a webinar on Tuesday, October 22, from 12:15 pm – 1:30 pm ET. Join us on June 21 for our State Oversight Academy 2024 symposium! We will have presentations by academics Robert Oldham, Jim Curry, Ben Goehring, Megan Rickman Blackwood, and Chinnu Parinandi. Each academic presentation will be paired with an oversight practitioner serving as reviewers including Nevada State Representative David Orentlicher, Legislative Aide to Nebraska State Senator Machaela Cavanaugh Margaret Buck, Executive Director and Staff Counsel at PEER Mississippi Ted Booth, and Levin Center director, Jim Townsend.
