Big News! The Carl Albert Center is part of a $1.5 million earmark to fund the American Congress Digital Archives Portal project (https://lnkd.in/gYwNkgr4). Thanks to WVU Libraries and Danielle Emerling for leading the project and Sen. Shelley Moore Capito for sponsoring the request. The project will allow us to digitize and share documents from the team's congressional collections. By sharing digitized documents to the portal, we democratize access to legislative history rather than only making it available to scholars with research budgets. The Center will use its portion of the $1.5 million NHPRC grant to purchase scanners, hire undergraduates, upgrade equipment, and develop state of the art workflows to greatly speed up digital processing. Soon, I will put out a call to locate our files related to congressional reform to digitize. In the last seven years the Center has received over $1.5 million in gifts and grants to further our digitization efforts. This year we have grants from NSF, NEH, and now NHPRC. A huge thanks to JA Pryse for leading our archival team and Rep. Tom Cole for his support of the Center. https://lnkd.in/gb4bXXtZ

A unique, nonpartisan institution that strengthens representative democracy through scholarship, learning, and service.
关于我们
Established in 1979 by the Oklahoma Regents for Higher Education and the Board of Regents of the University of Oklahoma, the Carl Albert Congressional Research and Studies Center is a nonpartisan institution devoted to teaching and research related to the United States Congress and more broadly to strengthening representative democracy through engaged and informed citizens. Supported by private, foundation, and public funds, the Center has grown into one of the largest and most comprehensive congressional studies centers in the country. In 1982, the Center archives contained 40 collections of congressional papers, and today the collections include the papers of 61 former members of congress, along with the papers of 25 political leaders, congressional staffers, and journalists. The Center is concerned with the health of our modern representative democracy. Its mission embraces three principal functions – teaching, research and public service. The Center offers academic programs in congressional studies at both the graduate and undergraduate levels. Alumni of the Center’s graduate fellowship program are leaders in academia and politics. The Center engages undergraduates in scholarly research, civic engagement activities, and service-learning opportunities at the Oklahoma State Capitol and in the local community. The women’s leadership programs address the underrepresentation of women in politics, public service and other leadership roles through educational programs for women across the state of Oklahoma. The Center promotes original research by faculty members and students into various aspects of politics and the Congress. And the Center’s congressional archive provides a national resource available to historians, political scientists, the media, and public interested in the health of our representative institutions.

The Carl Albert Center is recruiting a graduate Fellow to earn a PhD in political science from OU Political Science. Our package includes 5 years of funding with year 1 as a TA for the intro class, 2-4 as a RA or TA for CAC faculty, and a 5th year dedicated to finishing your dissertation. Our current stipend is $26k over 12 months and includes a tuition waiver and fees are paid by the Center. We also offer a book allowance, funds for conference travel, and tuition and housing for ICPSR. Center faculty Chuck Finocchiaro, Rachel Blum and myself chair dissertation committees and most Fellows focus their program of study on topics related to legislative studies, broadly defined, including elections, institutions, political parties, and public policy. Students have won NSF Dissertation Fellowships, and campus-wide dissertation fellowships and prizes and are currently working in tenure track jobs and industry. We are a collaborative bunch and faculty frequently coauthor with grad students. Apply here: https://lnkd.in/g52rQEFw
