Today’s #BlackHistoryMonth spotlight celebrates Maryum Phillips, President and CEO of Status: Home, which is Atlanta’s oldest and largest provider of permanent housing for low-income and homeless individuals and families impacted by HIV/AIDS. Rooted in the belief that housing is healthcare, Phillips leads a team that helps hundreds of adults and children access housing, healthcare resources, and supportive services that are critical to their survival and which contribute to their overall self-sufficiency. #endhomelessness

Today we celebrate Ralph David Abernathy Sr., a civil rights leader who was deeply committed to addressing systemic poverty, including advocating for housing equity. A close ally of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Abernathy took the reins of the Poor People's Campaign after Dr. King was assassinated in 1968. This campaign aimed to address systemic poverty and demanded better housing, jobs, and living conditions for marginalized communities, including Black Americans disproportionately affected by homelessness and inadequate housing. #BlackHistoryMonth #EndHomelessness

Today we spotlight Clara Brown, who was born a slave in Virginia in 1800 and moved to Denver after she was freed in 1859. She was one of the first African-American women to settle in Colorado, and became skillful in business ventures and investments. She was generous with her money and time, acquiring the nickname "Aunt Clara" because of how much she cared for her community, especially in helping Black people overcome poverty and enslavement. She helped those who were homeless and needed a place to stay, including sick or injured miners who—regardless of race—would often turn to her for help and a place to stay until they could return to work. #BlackHistoryMonth #endhomelessness

This #BlackHistoryMonth we’re spotlighting and celebrating leaders who have made significant advancements in affordable housing and the ongoing fight to end homelessness. One such leader is the late Noel Khalil, who in 1991 founded Columbia Residential, an Atlanta-based affordable housing company. With a belief that everyone is entitled to safe, quality housing, Khalil led the company as CEO until his passing in 2021, and oversaw its significant growth throughout Atlanta and the southeast. Today, Columbia Residential has a portfolio of 10,000+ apartment homes serving low-to-moderate-income individuals and families. In 2020, Khalil was inducted into the Affordable Housing Hall of Fame. ? #affordablehousing #endhomelessness

We are proud to announce that CaringWorks CEO Carol Collard was once again named as one of Atlanta’s most powerful leaders in the 2025 Atlanta 500, which is published annually by Atlanta Magazine! With a background in marketing and residential real estate, Carol became a passionate participant in the fight to end homelessness while working for a nonprofit developer. She returned to school to study social work and ultimately earned a PhD in the field. In 2002 she co-founded CaringWorks, which operates supportive housing and behavioral health services that help nearly 1,000 people escape chronic homelessness each year. Carol works daily to ensure that clients are treated with the respect and dignity they deserve, and she has demonstrated for more than two decades that Caring Does Work. Congratulations Carol! The CaringWorks team was out on the town last week, joining hundreds of other volunteers in the annual Point in Time (PIT) counts organized by our friends at Partners for HOME. We joined other homeless service providers and volunteers who spent an evening and several days assessing the number of people in our community who are experiencing homelessness. This yields valuable information on the homeless population that makes it possible to strategically target resources. #endhomelessness #caringworks
