Last week, I had the privilege of discussing the exciting opportunities in oral health innovation at the #HLTH2024 Conference in Las Vegas. The panel, titled “Say Ahh!”, was expertly moderated by Myechia Minter-Jordan, MD, MBA, senior advisor at the CareQuest Institute for Oral Health, and featured esteemed leaders such as Dr. Maria Ryan, executive vice president and chief clinical officer at Colgate-Palmolive; Dr. Miles Varn, chief medical officer at Sun Life; and Sarah Chavarria, CEO and president of Delta Dental Ins. of California and affiliates. Our conversation explored vital topics including oral-systemic health, chronic disease prevention, access to care, necessary policy changes, and increasing investment opportunities in the oral healthcare space. What resonated the most with me most, in addition to the topics being discussed, was the context and environment in which our panel was taking place. For too long, dentistry has been confined to a silo, limiting its impact within the broader healthcare landscape. This year’s HLTH USA Conference marked a pivotal moment for dentistry as oral health was finally included alongside the medical and healthcare innovation community.
