Ever wonder how Oak Street Health creates tech solutions that clinicians enjoy using? ?? The secret lies in their constant feedback loop with practicing clinicians. Take Dr. David Buchanan for example - he's the Chief Clinical & Technology Officer of this multibillion-dollar company, yet he still sees patients every single month. As OSH’s VP of Product Colton shared in a recent CareOps panel, Dr. David is constantly "in the trenches", testing new features and product updates firsthand. But why does this matter? It's simple: care organizations that win have the fastest clinical feedback loops. You'd think having clinical leaders still practice would be a no-brainer, right? Well, not always… Just the other day, a clinician (not from OSH) vented her frustrations to me. Her clinical leadership turned a deaf ear to complaints about their subpar tech stack. But then one of their providers fell ill, forcing the Chief Clinical Officer to cover shifts - something she hadn't done in ages. After just one week back in patient care, she admitted: "Wtf, our tech is a nightmare!" Just like that, roadmap priorities shifted quicker than you can say "value-based care." The moral of this story: you can't be a truly effective clinical leader without staying connected to the day-to-day realities of patient care.
