关于我们

CARE is an international development and humanitarian organisation that has been working in Timor-Leste since 1994. With programmes that extend across all parts of the country, CARE works with partners to save lives, defeat poverty, and achieve social justice. CARE works with remote, rural communities and civil society partners to combat gender inequality, as this has been shown to be one of the most effective ways to create sustainable development outcomes. Ensuring well-being and a voice for women and girls in rural, disadvantaged areas is at the heart of CARE’s work. This is achieved in four priority areas of Education, Women’s Economic Empowerment, Health, and promoting Women’s Voice in society through development and humanitarian programmes.

Our 30th anniversary celebration captured in photos ?? We were proud to welcome our friends and partners at our recent 30th anniversary celebration to interact with rural women involved in CARE’s flagship projects. The event presented an opportunity for CARE and partners to pause and reflect on our joint contribution to improving early childhood education, strengthening systems for maternal, child and women's health and economic opportunities, and enhancing agricultural productivity in rural areas. We pay tribute to our partners who are working tirelessly to realise the rights of rural women and girls in Timor-Leste. ?? #CAREImpact #CARETeam

Today, we are celebrating 30 years of CARE’s work in Timor-Leste. ?? Since 1994, CARE has been supporting communities and households across the country to alleviate poverty and advance social justice. Our initial lifesaving work in Timor-Leste was through support to displaced and food-insecure communities facing severe humanitarian challenges. After Timor-Leste restored its independence, CARE’s programs evolved to meet a broader range of development needs. In our mission to fight poverty and social injustice, we have witnessed that investments in rural women and girls have led to sustainable development outcomes. 30 years on, we therefore urge policy and decision makers to ensure the prioritisation of rural women’s rights at all levels of society. We would like to express our gratitude to those that have interacted with us on this journey, including project participants, local leaders, partners in government and civil society, supporters, donors, and CARE staff, for your continued support in enabling rural women and girls reach their full potential. #CAREImpact #CARETeam

Happy International Rural Women’s Day?? On this special day, we are celebrating rural women like Leonia, who are leading efforts to reduce household-level vulnerability to the impacts of climate change. In a rural part of Viqueque municipality, farmers in Leonia’s community face challenges to reliably produce agricultural crops during periods of heavy rain and wind. Families who rely on income from selling vegetable crops are therefore particularly vulnerable to financial hardship. Through her participation in the Disaster READY project, Leonia leads a Village Savings and Loans Association dedicated to building a climate-resilient group. Under her leadership, she is transforming lives in the face of climate change. Learn more about the impact from Leonia’s leadership: #RuralWomenDay

Today is Disaster Risk Reduction Day ?? Periods of prolonged drought are becoming an increasingly common phenomenon that threaten the well-being and livelihoods of communities across Timor-Leste. During periods of drought, women and girls are likely to be expected to walk further and spend longer hours collecting water, often in potentially unsafe circumstances. Today, we focus on stories from 5 resilient women who have supported their communities to reduce the risks associated with drought through water conservation initiatives, supported by the Disaster READY project. Disaster READY is supported by the Government of Australia and has a focus on ensuring vulnerable groups are represented and heard in disaster preparedness, management, and risk reduction activities. Meet Dircia Belo – a passionate climate change activist. At age 12, Dircia came across a story about a child’s adventure in the forest from CARE’s Lafaek magazine. The story sparked her passion for climate justice and conservation and would later inspire her to pursue a career as an activist. Now as a young adult and have acquired abundance of experience and leadership skills, Dircia reconnects with CARE’s Lafaek project to inspire other young people across Timor-Leste to follow her lead in taking positive action for climate change and conservation. This activity reflects CARE’s climate justice approach which prioritises engagement and partnership with communities and local actors, thereby enabling the prioritisation of indigenous knowledge and capacities. CARE’s work is rooted in community-based adaptation to climate change, and combines locally-led identification of the risks of climate change and biodiversity loss, with the aim of strengthening local capacities to adapt. This includes providing space to give voice to climate activists, such as Dircia. With every bowl of nutritious food that Filomena promotes in her community, she enables her neighbours to increase their knowledge on healthier meal choices. Filomena is a community health worker based in a rural community in Viqueque. Her team is composed of 15 female health workers who regularly visit communities in the area to build community knowledge and develop improved behaviours related to nutrition and hygiene. Through the COVID-19 and Health Systems Strengthening project, she regularly participates in cooking demonstration activities facilitated by the CARE team. This is how she practices healthy and hygienic cooking methods using local products, and promotes balanced nutritious meals amongst the community. ? Felicidade’s community in rural Viqueque is vulnerable to landslides. The impact is often life-threatening and costly. “Previously, my mind would not be at ease when the rain pours heavily. I always ask; do we leave behind our home and belongings and go somewhere else? But the question is where?”, Felicidade reflects. Eager to bring positive outcomes to this situation, Felicidade joined the local Suco Disaster Management Committee. When she became a member, she participated in trainings facilitated by the CARE team to strengthen the committee’s capacity to lead inclusive disaster risk preparedness, mitigation, and response efforts. “I would go to the community and share the importance of not cutting down trees to protect the soil and reduce the risk of landslides when we enter rainy seasons. I also lead efforts to plant trees in at-risk areas to strengthen the soil structure”. Now that the community has taken action to reduce the risks associated with landslides, Felicidade feels that her voice has been heard during the decision making processes, and she is more confident that her family will be safe. #DisasterREADY #AustralianAid #DisasterPreparedness #DisasterResponse #LocalAction #Inclusion #ClimateChangeAdaptation #TimorLeste #Pacific
