Are you looking for a job right now and frustrated? Here’s what you should focus on to get better results (many of you aren't doing #2) #1 Skip applying through random job boards → Applying directly through the company’s site. Why? It ensures your application lands directly in the company’s applicant tracking system. #2 Make LinkedIn your best friend → The more you engage with content and connections, the better your chances of being approached by a recruiter. Why? It increases your visibility and lets you demonstrate your interest and expertise in your field. #3 Stop waiting around → Not getting a callback? Take control by networking your way into the process instead of waiting for the recruiter to find you in a pile of applications. Why? Bypassing the ATS gives you a direct path to the hiring team and increases your chances of being noticed. So, every day, do these activities and see if you don't get better results: Apply on an organization's career site. Post and comment on LinkedIn. Make continual outreach to your network. Do this daily. You'll see results. Which step will you take today? Let me know in the comments. P.S. My Monday number is about generative AI. As a job seeker, you cannot ignore its impact. It is also an area of opportunity. The number is 16%. KPMG surveyed 225 C-Suite and senior business leaders about Gen AI. In their KPMG GenAI Survey 2024, these leaders had this to say about their workforce's abilities in this area. They believed only 16% of their workforce was highly equipped and capable of using GenAI. A much better 78% of these senior leaders felt their workforce was moderately equipped to use GenAI. And these C-Suite leaders are all in on it. 61% are looking to hire new talent in this area. Why are these leaders so gung-ho on GenAI? They believe it will do the following for their businesses. 71% say they can leverage data in decision-making. 52% believe it will open new revenue opportunities. 47% say it will shape their competitive position. As a job seeker, I find this to be such an area of opportunity. It is always better to be ahead than behind the curve. What do you think? ----- I am Shelley, a recruiter turned career coach. Have you ever been interviewed by someone younger than you? A recent online thread caught my attention: a Millennial had a technical interview with a Gen Z hiring team member. The candidate felt his experience should have given them the upper hand—but that wasn't the case. He was rejected. They raged against the Gen Z team member, claiming the interviewer wasn’t qualified to assess his skills. His belief? Someone at his level should’ve interviewed him. In the responses, some agreed, saying the experience gap was too wide. Others pointed out that maybe, just maybe, the candidate overestimated his skills—or that their attitude was the real issue. I chuckled when I saw it. This is a classic story. Boomers thought the same about Gen X. Gen X about Millennials. Now, Millennials are facing it with Gen Z. Different players, same story. Here’s what you should remember if you ever find yourself in this position: 1??Stay open-minded ?Experience is valuable, but every generation brings new ideas and skills. Be open to learning from everyone—regardless of age. 2??Focus on collaboration ?Show how you can work with the person interviewing you. It's not about proving you know more; it’s about demonstrating how well you fit into the team. 3??Check your attitude ?A bad attitude shows up, even when we think it’s hidden. Go in with curiosity and humility, and you'll stand out for the right reasons. Best Practice: If the person interviewing you is younger, lean into the opportunity. Focus on your shared goals, company vision, and how your skills align with the role's needs. What do you think? Have you ever been in this situation? How did you handle it? ----- I am Shelley, a recruiter turned career coach. 3 ways job seekers undersell themselves in interviews. Are you guilty of any of these? 1??Using "Just" "I'm just a project manager." By adding "just," you immediately minimize your role and impact. Instead, say, --> "I'm a project manager responsible for driving results and leading teams." 2??Using "But" "I don't have experience in marketing, but..." The word "but" cancels out everything that comes before it. Instead, say, --> "My transferable skills include [X], which I demonstrated in [project Y.]" 3??Using "Only" "I've only worked here for two years." "Only" downplays your experience. Instead, say, --> "In two years, I've achieved [specific accomplishment] and contributed to [specific impact]." Every time you think about using these words, stop yourself. Reframe your sentence to showcase your value. Do this in your next interview. → Own your abilities. → Watch how the energy shifts. → Show you are confident you can do this job. Which of these words do you need to drop? ----- I am Shelley, a recruiter turned career coach. Are you "just" sabotaging your job search? Here is what we mean. Are you "just" qualified? Are you "just" following up? Were you "just" in an interim role? Did you"just" want to see if you received my application? ???????? ???? ???????? ?????? "????????." It diminishes anything that comes after it. It diminishes you. Because you know what? Unconscious Bias in Your Job Search: Three Common Issues and Strategies for Success Unconscious bias exists in the hiring process. It is a shame but true. Yet, there are ways to navigate it and showcase your skills! Here are three common biases and how to address them: ? Overly Specific Experience: Companies may list years of experience that are overly high for the role. Answer: Highlight transferable skills and tangible results you've achieved, even in different roles. Projects you have worked on and achievements showcasing your ability to excel are key. A career coach can help you effectively identify and speak to these transferable skills on your resume and cover letter. ?The "Caregiver Penalty": Women with caregiving experience may face many assumptions about their diminished abilities when not working full-time. Answer: Demonstrate your organizational skills, time management expertise, and ability to prioritize and multitask. Include relevant skills gained through volunteering activities like PTA or leading Scout troops. A career coach can help you frame your caregiving experience in a way that emphasizes these valuable strengths for the workplace. ?Resume Gaps: Career breaks don't diminish your value (see Caregiver Penalty). Answer: Focus on the relevant skills gained or used during that time. Did you volunteer? Take courses? Address gaps with a brief explanation, demonstrating your continued development. A career coach can work with you to develop a compelling narrative that explains your career journey and highlights the skills you gained during any breaks. By strategically addressing unconscious bias, you can mitigate it and present yourself as a candidate they need to speak with because of your value. Happy job hunting!

Sometimes, "no" means "not yet." One of our clients recently was offered a job in his field. He was first interviewed in Spring 2023. You heard that right. A year ago. The employer posted the job, they started interviewing, and the position was put on hold. So, my client followed up every few months. He told them he was still interested. Then, this year, he received word that the job was back open. He was contacted immediately. He had fast-track interviews and got the job. Lesson: If you want the job, stay in touch. ?You will show your continued interest. ? You will make a positive impression. ? You will be top of mind.
