UChicago at COP29: Eugene's Reflection Eugene McCarty is a Class of 2026 student majoring in Molecular Engineering and Economics. Eugene has a passion for science, engineering, and the environment. He's explored these interests on campus as an environmental frontiers research assistant with the Mansueto Institute for Urban Innovation, University of Chicago, a member of the Energy & Climate Club, and a participant in the Green Data and Engineering Fellows cohort programs. For Eugene, one highlight of his time at COP has been the opportunity to meet policymakers and diplomats. Read Eugene's reflection below for more on his experience at the conference! "My name is Eugene McCarty, and I am a third-year Molecular Engineering and Economics double major in the College. I really enjoyed the talks with specific policy makers and negotiators, especially the individual ambassadors and the group of US negotiators that we set up. "Being able to see and meet representatives from countries all around the world, even ones that aren’t as much of a large presence on the global political stage, is my favorite part of COP29 because it is extremely inspiring witnessing people from the most diverse backgrounds possible all agree on a common point of interest: climate change. "The fact that global collaboration exists to this degree raises a lot of climate optimism for me, which is a point of view I’ve always found difficult to hold regarding climate change." ?? UChicago Student Spotlight: Eva Shoots for the Stars Eva Schultz has success down to a science – specifically, rocket science Eva is an astrophysics major in UChicago's Class of 2027. Her goal is to pursue graduate study in aerospace engineering so that she can launch a career with an organization focused on sending missions into space such as NASA or Airbus. Last year, Eva took several steps towards that goal. In addition to taking introductory astrophysics coursework, Eva secured a summer internship with Women And Drones, an organization that supports the growth and development of women in aerospace and aviation, with a particular focus on uncrewed aerial systems. During her time at Women And Drones, Eva learned about the industry from a diverse range of scientists and engineers. She guest edited the organization’s e-magazine Vertical Space and also helped Women And Drones establish a speaker’s bureau to raise the profile of rising leaders in this rapidly growing field. This year, Eva is continuing the momentum from her internship. She successfully secured a grant from the University’s Careers in Computer Science program to attend the Society of Women Engineers WE24 conference. At the conference, Eva explored the many exciting career pathways and companies open to rising engineers. “I was able to network with and engage with women across the engineering sphere, which was both motivating and inspiring,” Eva said. “I believe that this conference motivated my pursuit for a career in aerospace engineering and furthermore grew my skills in networking and career exploration as I talked with exhibitors at the career fair.” “I also attended a panel of prominent women at NASA, which was incredibly memorable and inspiring,” Eva added. “The panel focused on each woman's path to her current career and was incredibly exciting to see their successes and understand how that same career path may be accessible to me.” Congratulations Eva – we’re excited to support your during your next three years at UChicago! #uchicago #engineering #aerospace
