Texas Veteran Mental Health and Suicide Prevention: A Call to Action ?? According to the 2022 Veteran Suicide Data Sheet for Texas: ? In 2022, 582 veterans died by suicide in Texas. ? The suicide rate for veterans in Texas is 37.6 per 100,000, higher than both the national veteran suicide rate (34.7) and the general population’s rate (18.6 in Texas). ? Firearms accounted for 74.6% of veteran suicides, emphasizing the need for firearm safety measures. ?? Highest Risk Age Groups: ? Veterans aged 18–34 have the highest rate at 68.3 per 100,000, reflecting the urgent need to support younger veterans. ?? Statement from DPS: On Monday, December 16, 2024, Ellis County Detention Officer Isaiah Bias, 28 YOA, was killed in the line of duty at the Ellis County Jail. At the request of Ellis County Sheriff Brad Norman, the Texas Ranger Division, Texas Department of Public Safety, is investigating the murder. This is an ongoing investigation and there are no further details to release at this time. Our city sits in the heart of Ellis County, and today the men and women who serve Ellis County are in our hearts. As a teenager, Isaiah began working with his brothers and sisters at the Ellis County Sheriff's Office in the Explorer Program before becoming a detention officer as an adult. We grieve because he was taken from us much too soon with so much potential and so much life left to live. We mourn the senseless and tragic loss of a public servant who dedicated the majority of his life to helping this community. Our hearts ache for his loved ones and his family who wear the uniform. Rest easy, Corporal Bias. Thank you for your service.

After compiling statistics on veteran suicides from a FOI submitted in May this year, the numbers are alarming. Initially estimated at around 400+, the data revealed a higher toll. Since 2017, the losses exceed 500, with more yet to be reported. It's important to note that many suicides go unaccounted for in official statistics.
