Did you know that some health tests don’t work as well for non-White populations? The HbA1c test, which is used to diagnose diabetes and assess heart disease risk, doesn’t give the same accurate results for everyone. This means some people, especially in non-White populations, might get diagnosed too late or miss out on care they need. The number of people in the U.S. who died from coronary heart disease related to obesity nearly tripled from 1999 to 2020. Black adults, men ages 55-64, and people who live in the Midwest and non-metropolitan areas had the highest rates, according to an analysis of federal data. Manage weight by controlling portions, being active, and choosing a healthy eating pattern that includes fruits, vegetables, lean meats and whole grains. And don’t be afraid to ask your health care professional for help. These findings are considered preliminary until published as full manuscripts in a peer-reviewed scientific journal.
