#mCDR classic Science paper time: Back in 1978, Jim Kennett (who helped discover the existence of rapid climate change using oxygen isotope records) and N. Penrose noted truly extraordinary preservation of Sargassum seaweeds in sediments from the deep, anoxic, and hypersaline Orca Basin. Seaweed materials commonly degrade within weeks in the open ocean, but here they are apparently thousands of years old! We also see this exceptional preservation in our shorter cores, shown here (R/V Point Sur, May 2024). Even though we had already talked with Jim (also UCSB Department of Earth Science) about his paper, it was pretty hard to keep our jaws off the floor when these came up. (Smaller pieces are found throughout.) The Earth System has some pretty neat ways to sequester organic carbon. Let's use this knowledge to get some CO2 out of the atmosphere. ??
