Dan Deviri, CEO of CarbonBlue, shares his insights from COP29 through the lens of CarbonBlue's mission: developing innovative technology to remove excess CO2 from water.
The primary substance on our planet which absorbs, captures and sequesters atmospheric CO2 is water. Our technology removes CO2 from water, freeing it up to absorb more from the atmosphere, and allowing us to instantly turn any water-based infrastructure into a carbon dioxide removal facility. Our Mission Provide humanity with the technological means to create a sustainable world. Quickly, safely, and profitably. Our Solution Earth’s water sources are the most important atmospheric CO2 sink in the world. Since the industrial revolution, anthropogenic CO2 emissions have risen above the capacity of our waters to absorb them, leading to phenomena like ocean acidification, and hindering our global ecosystem’s ability to self-regulate. Our solution is to remove excess CO2 from the water and lock it away indefinitely, enhancing our planet’s ability to fight climate change by absorbing CO2 from the atmosphere. Our Technology: Marine Calcium Looping Our proprietary process utilizes calcium, one of the most abundant chemical elements on the planet, to mineralize, separate, and remove dissolved CO2 from water in a closed-loop system without further altering its chemical composition or balance in any way. This water can then be safely utilized, or returned to its source, while continuing to perform the crucial function of absorbing more atmospheric CO2 in both cases.

Mid- #COP29 Recap *Water-Based CDR* CarbonBlue has been busy at #Baku so far. On Thursday, we organized our first event: The Role of Water in Global Decarbonization. Hosted by AirMiners’ TITO JANKOWSKI, the panel featured CarbonBlue CEO Dr. Dan Deviri, the amazing Limenet CEO Stefano Cappello, Rewind CSO Noa Olenik and BlueGreen Water Technologies COO Oleg Tsvibel, all showcasing different approaches to decarbonization utilizing water. The event was visited by the Minister of Environmental Protection, Idit Silman, and we were glad we got the chance to convey our message: we need a robust portfolio of complementary approaches and solutions, spanning geographies and technologies, if we hope to reach our global climate goals. ? *Article 6* Walk around the summit floors and it won’t take you long to realize that Article 6 is the main event this COP. But what is it? Article 6 refers to the 6th article of the Paris Agreement, which sets out the principles for global carbon markets. While the Paris Agreement laid down the cornerstone for international carbon credit trading standards, there are still a lot of outstanding issues that need to be resolved before countries can start trade. *Integrating CDR in National Pledges* To take part in this conversation, we arranged a panel hosted by our Director of Sales, Tal Katz, on integrating CDR in national pledges, with the understanding that to reach our climate goals Article 6 will have to take CDR into account, in any scenario. This panel was a tremendous opportunity to hear from some of the world's leading experts, including Professor Graciela Chichilnisky, one of the leading negotiators at the Kyoto Accords which paved the way for the Paris Agreement, Research fellow in Net-Zero Aligned Offsetting Dr Injy Johnstone from the University of Oxford, the estimeed Gideon Behar, Israel’s Foreign Ministry’s Special Envoy for Climate Change and Sustainability, and Kel Coulson - Carbon Engineering’s Director of Policy. ? *New Carbon Economies* One of the most interesting aspects of this conversation was the huge financial potential these new international standards could offer. By removing barriers for cross-border commerce, new opportunities for the global South are created to develop critical infrastructure – particularly water assets – while providing value to the North in the form of tradable emission reduction. It is fascinating to see that some countries are already investing in becoming leaders in this emerging economy. We were particularly struck by Canada’s work in this field, and how they are seizing the opportunity offered by climate work to not just bolster the environment, but also their economy. ? *What’s Next?* Over the next few days, CarbonBlue will be attending the various events taking place around COP; if you’re here, feel free to reach out! We’re eager to see how the negotiations progress, and to provide the technological means to see our global climate resolutions carried out.

We are proud to join the Israeli Delegation to #COP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan next week! Addressing #climatechange requires an intrinsically holistic approach. Whether you're tackling it from a #technology, #policy, #social or #education angle, whether you're from the private or public sector, whether you're from #MENA, #Europe or #Asia, as soon as you start to seriously think about the challenges we're facing , the interconnected nature of climate becomes almost immediately apparent. COP is THE place where everyone trying to address this huge challenge comes together to find solutions, and the connections and agreements reached there then go on to change the world. For CarbonBlue, the opportunity to take part in this summit is critical, and we are eager to show up and take part. See you there!

Excited to be a part of the PortXL Cohort!
Introducing: CarbonBlue After rigorous selection our 2024 cohort of 10 start-ups/scale-ups emerged. Last week, we started to introduce them to you. Today it’s time for CarbonBlue! Should you want to know more about them and their technology, simply get in touch with Tal Katz or contact them through their website. CarbonBlue grabbed our attention because of its vision of ?? ????????????-???????????????? ????????????. As innovators in the maritime industry, we know that decarbonization is key to reaching climate goals. We believe that CarbonBlue’s environment-first model will be integral to getting there. So what do they do to help us decarbonize? They have created ???????????????? ???????? ?????????????? ?????? ???????????????????? ???? ?????? ???????? ?????????? ??????????????, including the ocean, without adding, removing or changing the water’s chemical composition in any way. Amazing right? But they go beyond this, because they are also doing it without the costly, energy-consuming electrical components that you would think you’d need for a project of this scale. Instead, they have implemented ?? ?????????????? ???????????????? ???????? ?????? ?????????????????? ???????? ?????? ?????????? ???????????? ???? ???????????????? ?????????? ????????????????????????????, ?????? ???????? ???????? ???????? ?????? ????????????.? We’re excited to have CarbonBlue as a part of our 2024 Cohort and can’t wait to see what they do to help decarbonize the maritime and shipping industries! CarbonBlue's Director of Sales, Tal Katz, who will be landing in New York for #ClimateWeekNYC today, sums up his experiences from the E-Fuel Summit 2024 in Conroe, Texas. If you're in New York, don't miss the opportunity to speak with him about his sustainable energy insights while he's in town!
Summing up a productive trip to the USA before I return to NYC climate week. I had the pleasure of attending the E-Fuel Summit 2024 in Conroe, Texas. It was a great event — a focused meet-up of professionals from the industry that you usually see on the stages of mega-events, only in an intimate setting that allowed for deep conversations on the future of the e-fuel industry. I feel truly fortunate to have met so many industry leaders and innovators over the two days of the conference. Cathryn Estes, Wagner Canelhas, Antonio Villaluenga, Andy Ralph, Mauricio Acevedo, Tyler Cole, your insightful presentations, meetings, or just sharing a drink at the end of the day made this conference highly enjoyable and beneficial. Further than that, traveling and advancing our mission around Texas, Louisiana, and NYC with Dan Deviri was the perfect mix of business and pleasure. On to the next one!
CarbonBlue is coming to #ClimateWeekNYC tomorrow – and we want to meet you there! There’s no bigger climate week than Climate Week NYC, and the CarbonBlue leadership team is going to be there to meet innovators and researchers, find opportunities for new collaborations, and to speak about how our vision is an integral part of the collaborative solution to the climate crisis. Whether you’re in town for the events, or see NYC as your homebase – we want to hear from you! If you’ve been waiting for an opportunity to speak with the CarbonBlue leadership over coffee (or a classic NYC bagel), feel free to get in touch. While we will be hopping between various events happening throughout the city, you'll definitely find us at the Israel-US Climate Tech Delegation event, “EcoBreakthrough: Israel’s Global Climate Solutions” in Manhattan (link in first comment), as well as at the Ocean Visions event at the New York Bar Association (link in second comment) where CEO Dan Deviri will give a short talk about the CarbonBlue journey.
