Cat's out the bag: our co-founder Noah Deich is back home! Noah was out on loan to U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), where he helped craft major CDR initiatives. We're thrilled to have him rejoin the team in an advisory role. As one of the first and most visionary leaders in US carbon removal, Noah will bring his tremendous passion to C180 as we continue shaping the field. Since returning, he's drafted a blog with 10 key takeaways from his tenure at DOE.

Cuts to federal programs or environmental protections don’t just impact climate progress, they also disrupt key industries across America. Thank you to Rep. McClellan and the Sustainable Energy and Environment Coalition (SEEC) Institute for addressing this with urgency during their discussion on energy and climate policy in the 119th Congress. In a rapidly changing policy landscape, SEEC is working with staffers to communicate how climate and energy policy impact a wide range of issues beyond just environmental agencies. Erin Burns and Alyson Lee from Carbon180 were there to learn more about how SEEC and Rep. McClellan are championing these critical conversations.

Last week, Carbon180 brought four Midwest farmers to talk with policymakers on the Hill and at USDA about the challenges and opportunities of agroforestry on marginal lands, with the goal of grounding future policy in on-the-field realities. In just two days the producers: ?? sat on a roundtable hosted by the House Climate Solutions Caucus ?? met with offices representing IA, MI, and IN ?? talked about technical assistance and local support with two USDA divisions ?? met with Agriculture Committee staff in both the House and Senate. You can find more insights from these producers in our latest blog here: https://bit.ly/49yXut1

It’s been an inspiring and action-packed week centered around #agroforestry! I had the opportunity to join four dedicated agroforestry practitioners as they shared their impactful stories of implementing agroforestry on marginal lands with Congressional offices, USDA-NRCS, and USDA Farm Service Agency. Their firsthand insights highlighted the environmental and economic potential of these practices. To close out the week, I had the privilege of meeting with the Steering Committee of BIPOC Leaders in Agroforestry, where we discussed ideas to elevate the voices of BIPOC communities in agroforestry policy and to ensure policies are addressing the challenges they face. It was encouraging to witness the interest and enthusiasm from lawmakers for agroforestry’s ability to benefit both the environment and farmers—particularly in diversifying production systems and supporting resilient, sustainable land management. The message throughout the week was clear: to build resilience into our food systems, we need to advocate for innovative policies that reduce the risks of adopting diversified, perennial systems and meet land stewards where they are. #AgroforestryPolicy #SustainableAgSystems #FarmResilience #InnovationInAg

Wondering how farmers and ranchers are thinking about carbon? This year I've set out to engage farmers and ranchers to get a sense of what incentives and support?are?or?are?not working for them. Here's what I've learned so far: > Land stewards are typically?more interested in?monitoring of natural resources that can help their day to day decision making?to?manage for improved soil health. The singular focus on carbon, which takes years to decades to build, is not helpful in their work > Innovation in conservation management practices is often at odds with existing agriculture risk management programs, meaning innovative land stewards are facing additional challenges when navigating programs that should provide support systems > There is still a lot of skepticism around carbon, carbon markets, programs to pay for carbon. Most continue to be perceived as inaccessible and payment structures do not meet the financial needs or risks of land stewards Truly activating agricultural lands as carbon sinks will require centering land stewards' natural resources priorities, such as water availability?and biodiversity, alongside soil carbon, and implementing system-wide change to support holistic management of agricultural ecosystems. Stay tuned as we scale these conversations across all US regions to develop a policy roadmap to address land stewards' challenges?in building soil carbon and overall operational resilience
