Methane and the time value of climate action - Methane's warming potential is 80x that of CO2 over a two decade time span. Action to reduce it now has very high benefit, very fast. That buys us time to ramp up other climate solutions and reduces the cost of future climate action. The good news is that methane credit retirements are on the rise. Some of what’s shown in this report is why I remain so very committed to addressing not only Orphan Wells, but abandoned non-producing wells, idle wells, leaking plugged wells, and more. Everyone with an interest in orphan oil and gas wells in the U.S. should read the DOI's Orphan Well Program Office's annual report to Congress on their efforts, which just came out (https://lnkd.in/eUDQKBBD). Some highlights: - 9636 wells plugged with federal funds across the country - Methane emissions reductions equivalent to 155k MTCO2e/yr (per year because these wells would have kept emitting in the absence of plugging) - Interestingly, the bulk of the wells plugged on federal lands have been in Louisiana, which goes to show that federal lands are everywhere and orphan wells are everywhere - BLM is managing 10k idle wells and working to prevent them from becoming orphaned -- a challenge shared by all of the states, who oversee perhaps 150-200k idle wells all told - A key new contribution is a chart on p. 47 (h/t to Ted Boettner for bringing it to my attention) -- this is certainly an incomplete snapshot but very interesting to see the range of emissions coming out. It's hard to say how much of this variation is due to well selection, methodology, geologic and engineering factors -- there is still quite of bit of science work to do before we can really understand and trust these numbers, but the more data we have the better decisions we can make with limited resources.
It took 20 years to get to now, but the next 2 years or so will be the most paramount to the VCC market as methodologies are defined to quantify emission reduction efforts. "Voluntary carbon markets provide a voluntary mechanism for individuals, businesses, and nonprofit organizations to offset carbon dioxide emissions through VCCs. VCCs are tradeable, intangible instruments issued by a carbon crediting program that represent a greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reduction to or removal from the atmosphere equivalent to one metric ton of carbon dioxide. Although VCCs have existed for more than 20 years, there is no standardized methodology to quantify emissions reduction or removal levels."
