Through monthly events and information sharing, the objective of this group is to raise the capacity to understand, measure, and reduce embodied carbon in the Portland Metro Region. What is Embodied Carbon?? Embodied carbon is the sum impact of all the greenhouse gas emissions attributed to the materials throughout their life cycle: extracting from the ground, manufacturing, construction, maintenance and end of life/disposal. The built environment contributes almost 40% of CO2 emissions worldwide. New research from the IPCC, the UN, and the scientific community stresses the critical importance of a 2030 milestone: if we do not achieve a 45-55% reduction in total global emissions by 2030 we will have lost the opportunity to meet the 1.5/2 ℃ warming threshold and climate change will become irreversible. The immediate focus for embodied carbon reductions must therefore be on the next decade.

We partnered with Prosper Portland to host a panel discussion "Opportunities for Adaptive Reuse of Vacant Office Buildings in PDX" as a part of Sustainable Building Week - Portland, OR. Some key takeaways: ?? Midsize historic buildings may offer the best opportunities for converting to housing due to a mix of cost of acquisition, ideal unit depth/size/mix of units, and stack of financing incentives. ? Low-rise buildings are easier to upgrade to net-zero-ready due to larger roof to unit proportions that allow for more solar rooftop arrays. ???? Think about other uses: the Made in Old Town project is working on bringing advanced/clean manufacturing back to our historic Old Town district. ? Seismic upgrades may complicate a project's finance, but we need to invest in public health and safety measures in the face of "the big one" and catastrophic climate events. ?? We must invest in the value of existing buildings and reduce embodied carbon emissions by promoting adaptive reuse in zoning code. For our April monthly hub meeting, we will gather virtually and learn from Brightworks Sustainability: Total Embodied Emissions for a TI. They will share results from multi-year study. Brightworks gathered 100% of the materials on a TI project (40k sf; 2 floors; full occupant), including MEP-IT/AV-Security-Fire, Furniture and all construction?materials down to screws and nuts.
