Come join us at our March hub gathering! After having some great virtual meetings in January and February we are hoping to stretch our legs and get together in person and talk all things embodied carbon! Our March meeting is going to be?in person on Monday, March 24th at Good Wood in NE Portland.??We purposely planned this happy hour will be the day before the Mass Timber Conference starts (just a quarter mile down the street) so feel free to invite anyone coming to town.?If you have not visited GoodWood yet, they are a salvage lumber products retailer in inner NE Portland. They will give an overview of the lumber salvaging process and the products they offer. The space is great, it feels a bit like a forest. The majority of our time will then be spent mingling and enjoying light snacks and some drinks. Hope to see you there and please feel free to forward along to colleagues?coming into town for the Mass Timber Conference. ? Link to sign up for the (free) event: https://lnkd.in/g_McqsG9

Our group's objective is to raise the capacity to understand, measure, and reduce embodied carbon in Portland.
关于我们
Through monthly events and information sharing, the objective of this group is to raise the capacity to understand, measure, and reduce embodied carbon in the Portland Metro Region. What is Embodied Carbon?? Embodied carbon is the sum impact of all the greenhouse gas emissions attributed to the materials throughout their life cycle: extracting from the ground, manufacturing, construction, maintenance and end of life/disposal. The built environment contributes almost 40% of CO2 emissions worldwide. New research from the IPCC, the UN, and the scientific community stresses the critical importance of a 2030 milestone: if we do not achieve a 45-55% reduction in total global emissions by 2030 we will have lost the opportunity to meet the 1.5/2 ℃ warming threshold and climate change will become irreversible. The immediate focus for embodied carbon reductions must therefore be on the next decade.

Join us next week (Feb 19th, 12-1pm on Zoom) for our Embodied Carbon Spec Workshop! We are hosting a spec workshop focused on incorporating embodied carbon transparency/reporting requirements and reduction targets into specifications. A knowledgeable?guest line-up will share and guide what we hope to be an action-oriented meeting - where we'll learn a little bit more about the CLF Model Embodied Carbon Specs?and their adaptability (https://lnkd.in/gBHyuF-V). Then we'll break out into subject groups with a group guide to dig a little deeper in the language we can use and how we can align on target-setting strategies, and other variables that might impact the strategy you or your spec writer would take to meet a goal. You're invited to bring any good or less good examples of embodied carbon specs related to Front End, Concrete, Concrete Masonry Units, Structural Steel, and Mass Timber spec sections. We want to learn from your successes and also your lessons. Thank you to guests Lona Rerick, Melody Fontenot, AIA, CSI, CCCA, CCS, Christopher Bennett, Matt Hoffman, and Ben Stickney! We partnered with Prosper Portland to host a panel discussion "Opportunities for Adaptive Reuse of Vacant Office Buildings in PDX" as a part of Sustainable Building Week - Portland, OR. Some key takeaways: ?? Midsize historic buildings may offer the best opportunities for converting to housing due to a mix of cost of acquisition, ideal unit depth/size/mix of units, and stack of financing incentives. ? Low-rise buildings are easier to upgrade to net-zero-ready due to larger roof to unit proportions that allow for more solar rooftop arrays. ???? Think about other uses: the Made in Old Town project is working on bringing advanced/clean manufacturing back to our historic Old Town district. ? Seismic upgrades may complicate a project's finance, but we need to invest in public health and safety measures in the face of "the big one" and catastrophic climate events. ?? We must invest in the value of existing buildings and reduce embodied carbon emissions by promoting adaptive reuse in zoning code. Learn more about federal programs and incentives: https://lnkd.in/gmzS-hcz Thank you to our panelists: Julie Garver, LEED AP Shelly Carlton, MBA Hillary Adam Brian Moore ( ? connect with Brian at Prosper Portland for office-to-housing conversion incentives) Jonah Gamblin Matthew Claudel and co-organizers Katherine Krajnak, Katie Felver LEED AP, Galen Whalen, and moderator Lauren Zimmermann Onstad.

October is coming and that means Sustainably Building Week in Portland! This year, the?Carbon Leadership Forum Portland hub?and?Prosper Portland?are collaborating to host this panel discussion on the state of the market for adaptive reuse of vacant office space in Portland. Have you heard Portland has one of the highest delinquency rates for central city office space of large cities across the country? Did you know reuse of existing buildings can result in a 40% to 75% reduction in embodied greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions compared to new construction? Join this session to learn about the analysis and funding opportunities for reuse of existing buildings to save carbon emissions, increase housing units, and even bring innovative businesses into the city. Perspectives include economic development, urban design and preservation, energy efficiency upgrades for commercial construction, and the nuts and bolts of developing, designing, and building housing units in existing buildings. Reserve your spot! https://lnkd.in/gCiPkghn And check out all the other great SBW events here: https://lnkd.in/e6PDBUH
