We’re beyond thrilled to be named a FINALIST for the Playing for the Planet award, chosen by the UNEP, the United Nations Environment Program’s Digital Transformations Team. This honor is for the in-game activation of the GREEN GAME JAM event that best incorporates the theme of real world action. Alongside four other stellar finalists, our in-game experience tried to consider not just reaching the player emotionally, but also activating them in the real world. The Quest we created centered around the player helping Von the Raven to Fill the Green Game Jam Jar and Plant a Real Tree. Throughout the experience, we watched as our players engaged with this fun, funny raven and some of his forest friends, around the themes of Food, Waste, and Restoration (Nature). Their in-game actions resulted in the planting of Real Trees through our partners at Earthlungs Reforestation Foundation — and we cheered as we saw how many of our players committed to real-world actions. We want to thank Playing for the Planet and the United Nations Environment Program’s Digital Transformations team for choosing us as a finalist and for believing in the power of play. We did something completely different by asking players to take action for the planet outside of the game, in the real world. The quality and creativity of the submissions we saw as a result however, was absolutely incredible. Green Game Jam: EverForest Impact Seeds of Change This year, the EverForest team joined the Green Game Jam, an initiative by Playing for the Planet. In global soft-launch mode, we didn’t know what to expect from our players—so we watched with curiosity, hoping to learn some things. Would players dig into a Limited Time Quest, hosted by a sassy raven, and use their valuable time to earn enough points to plant a Real Tree? Fill the Jar, Plant a Real Tree! Playing for the Planet presented three important topics to choose from: Food, waste, and nature (restoration). As well they asked that teams consider real-world action. The structure of our game and narrative allowed us to do all three themes and we had so much fun creating a quest for each—with the clear call-to-action. Von the Raven asked players to Fill the Jar, Plant a Tree! Players completed tasks for Von to fill the jar, earning Real Tree Points along the way. Players who finished all three quests had enough points to plant a Real Tree and players who didn’t complete them still earned points they could use in the future. Play is Powerful—So are our Players!
