Appreciate the shout out from Erin Billeri at the Global CCS Institute that CapturePoint LLC is one of the companies poised to put "wins on the board" for CCUS in the U.S.! #CapturePoint CEO Tracy Evans returned from the meetings enthusiastic about the game-changing developments that are expected to demonstrate major progress in the coming year. Afterwards, Tracy noted that he received numerous follow up inquiries about three major 2024 milestones at CapturePoint LLC that are setting the stage for more exciting news from our team in 2025. First, CapturePoint LLC was the initial U.S. company to monetize the expanded Section 45Q tax credits for our carbon capture projects in Coffeyville, Kansas (from fertilizer manufacturing) and Liberal, Kansas (at the Arkalon biofuels facility). Together, those projects are currently generating tax credits on nearly 1 million metric tons of captured CO2 annually when operating at full capacity. For more: https://lnkd.in/e6-fJUYs. Second, our Oklahoma Carbon Hub (https://lnkd.in/eGU55JMJ) recently became the world's first operational multi-modal CCUS facility, with the launch of Project Bantam, Heimdal's on-site Direct Air Capture (DAC) facility. The Oklahoma Carbon Hub includes industrial CO2 capture (from CRNF's fertilizer plant in Coffeyville, KS); DAC; extensive CO2-EOR operations in the historic North Burbank Unit in Osage County, OK; and has filed for an EPA Class VI permit for a future deep underground carbon storage site. Third, our CENLA Hub project in Louisiana (which has the potential to be the largest on-shore deep underground carbon storage hub in the U.S.) signed major agreements in the past year with Energy Transfer (https://lnkd.in/evr2xWXy), which includes CO2 captured from certain holdings of Expand Energy; with Bia Energy LLC's Blue Methanol plant (https://lnkd.in/eFzEmAhM); and with Heirloom and Climeworks as they develop the Project Cypress DAC Hub (https://lnkd.in/er3cxgyZ ). CapturePoint LLC also acknowledged recently that we are considering options for expanding the planned CENLA Hub regional CO2 pipeline network in anticipation of more announcements coming in the next year. As he looked forward, Tracy Evans thanked the team at CapturePoint LLC and all of our partners who helped achieve these major milestones in 2024... and for laying the foundation for more of the "wins on the board" in 2025 referenced by Erin Billeri. #CCUS #CarbonManagement
Last week the Global CCS Institute held a CCS Finance Meeting and our fall Member Meeting the day after the election – which, if nothing else, certainly lent itself to easy networking talking points. A central theme throughout was that carbon management may be catalyzed by government policy but in the US it is driven by business case and industry investment – and whether corporations are pursuing CCS to meet climate goals (largely set internally, by states, or international drivers and not at the federal level), for economic development purposes, or to future-proof – that trajectory is not going to change. Moreover, there is an expectation that durable policies at the federal level will continue due to bipartisan support. Speaking of the “business case,” another big theme was the focus on creating scalable, replicable, cost-effective business models. We need “wins on the board” that eventually lead to nth of a kind projects. I left our meetings optimistic that some of the most creative minds in the industry are well on their way to getting us there. It’s Chatham House rules, but I think Calpine, SLB, SLB Capturi, CO280, and CapturePoint LLC (to name a few) don’t mind if I attribute this momentum to them. Demand for low-carbon energy from hyperscalers was omnipresent – and the key takeaway was that CCS may be advantaged as a low-carbon power solution for cost and timeline purposes ?– but…cost is important and we need to maintain momentum on Class VI wells and the overall CCS ecosystem, and continue our advocacy and education efforts to ensure that stakeholders understand that risks are acceptably low. The biggest takeaway of all is that we are all in this together and need to continue to collaborate – so in that vein, thank you to the UK Department for Energy Security and Net Zero for sponsoring a networking breakfast and panel discussion on UK progress on CCUS and opportunities for collaboration (following the recent UK announcement of £21.7 billion to support CCUS projects!) and to Kiewit for sponsoring the evening networking reception and their role in putting steel in the ground!?And to everyone across two days who shared their insights and perspectives, thank you - Stuart Page, Bret Logue, Michael Brownlie, Nikhil Joshi, Renato Mour?o レナート?モウラオ, Noah Zerance, CFA, Michael Yurkerwich, CFA, Cris Crissy, Jeffrey D. Enthusiastic Community Outreach at the Project Cypress Open Houses in Louisiana! Earlier this week, the CapturePoint LLC team met with community members at two Open Houses, co-sponsored by Project Cypress lead partners Climeworks and Heirloom in affiliation with Battelle and the Office of Clean Energy Demonstrations | U.S. Department of Energy. Project Cypress is driving deployment of large-scale Direct Air Capture (DAC) facilities that will capture carbon dioxide from the atmosphere in Louisiana in a demonstration of the potential for developing regional DAC hubs around the United States. Both Heirloom, which is developing DAC in the Port of Caddo-Bossier in NW Louisiana, and Climeworks, which is developing DAC in Calcasieu Parish in SW Louisiana, have selected CapturePoint LLC to transport the captured CO2 for permanent deep underground sequestration in our CENLA Hub carbon storage site. The CapturePoint LLC team was excited to discuss Project Cypress goals with engaged community members on two consecutive evenings, and to share our leading-edge plans for a best-in-class Louisiana carbon management hub that will both protect the environment as well as public health and safety.
