Michigan has significantly expanded its R&D Tax Credit, incentivizing in-state research activity.?Bills HB 5100-5101 were passed by the House this week, and the details are exciting: ?????? Who? Corporate and pass-through entities incurring qualified R&D expenses in MI ?? What? Activities that meet the federal definition of R&D ?? When? Tentative claims must be submitted by 4.1.2026 for TY 2025 ?? How Much? o??Large Taxpayers (250+ Employees): Up to 3% on base expenses and 10% on excess expenses (capped at $2M annually) o??Smaller Taxpayers: ?Up to 3% on base expenses and 15% on excess expenses (capped at $250K annually) ?? University Bonus? o? Additional 5% Credit for research conducted with Michigan research universities (up to $200K annually) This is a huge step up from the previous 1.9% Credit – what a win for MI!
