Gainful employment and opportunities for work are one of the single biggest drivers of changing not only individual life trajectories, but the opportunities that generations of people within families have. You’ve probably heard me say time and time again that closing the opportunity gap takes systemic change. We have to lift people up, allow them to participate, and SEE people for what they are capable of today – and tomorrow. Talent is everywhere. Yes, maybe we have a shortage of certain skills, but we certainly do not have a shortage of people who have the skills today that can grow into what we need for the future. The only limitation is what we are willing to permit and see and allow. We are the limitation. When we are prepared to see people for the skills they bring to the table, regardless of whether they have a degree or not (the paper ceiling is real!), or the zip code they came from, or how prestigious their high school was (yes, all of this and more happens every day in job searches), we can create true opportunity for the individual and for our organizations. If you want to explore more on this topic, I highly recommend a new Netflix documentary, “Untapped: Closing America’s Opportunity Gap.” Watching it, I was reminded why a year ago I made the leap to join Cappfinity and to spend every day purposefully working towards closing the opportunity gap, creating the tools and spaces for us to understand, define, and assess skills, and to create upward mobility and growth for thousands of people. Cappfinity was honored to host an impactful conversation yesterday at Harvard University around the importance of deploying skills in scalable and effective ways that support students across their academic experience. It was wonderful to see so many departments represented across higher education, as well as guests from employers. We believe higher education is uniquely positioned to be at the forefront of the skills movement in a variety of ways.? Over the hours we spent together, we had great dialogue, including the following insights: - ?? Define what skills are to help students articulate with confidence how they utilize their skills and how it is connected to what they want to do.? ?- ?? Skills are constantly evolving and need a better way to measure and assess skills as they are more than just “a badge.” Skills can be grouped and mapped to existing frameworks.? ?- ?? Buy-in from the top and across many academic departments (think career champions in departments) is key. Explicitly identify core competencies and common language that is adopted.?? ?- ?? Identify frameworks such as NACE competencies into curriculum, develop a program that students can enter that focuses on core competencies that identifies and tracks skill development, create early programs for specific populations or a skills “tracker”? ? We are over the moon at Cappfinity to be shortlisted with British Airways for the ambitious journey we undertook together to redefine talent development through the High Flyers Programme as the External Learning Solution of the Year 2025. Designed to elevate top-tier talent and support succession planning, the programme focuses on retention, talent pipeline strength, diversity, and talent mobility, all aligned with BA’s goals. It features two dynamic development paths: Activate and Accelerate crafted to deliver deep self-insight, practical leadership skills, and the confidence needed to propel participants' careers.
