Gainful employment and opportunities for work are one of the single biggest drivers of changing not only individual life trajectories, but the opportunities that generations of people within families have. You’ve probably heard me say time and time again that closing the opportunity gap takes systemic change. We have to lift people up, allow them to participate, and SEE people for what they are capable of today – and tomorrow. Talent is everywhere. Yes, maybe we have a shortage of certain skills, but we certainly do not have a shortage of people who have the skills today that can grow into what we need for the future. The only limitation is what we are willing to permit and see and allow. We are the limitation. When we are prepared to see people for the skills they bring to the table, regardless of whether they have a degree or not (the paper ceiling is real!), or the zip code they came from, or how prestigious their high school was (yes, all of this and more happens every day in job searches), we can create true opportunity for the individual and for our organizations. If you want to explore more on this topic, I highly recommend a new Netflix documentary, “Untapped: Closing America’s Opportunity Gap.” Watching it, I was reminded why a year ago I made the leap to join Cappfinity and to spend every day purposefully working towards closing the opportunity gap, creating the tools and spaces for us to understand, define, and assess skills, and to create upward mobility and growth for thousands of people.
