Today, @safeatx and @capitalahousing broke ground on The Lancaster, a first-of-its-kind PSH project for the city of Austin, which will provide 60 units of affordable housing for survivors of abuse and women and children at risk of homelessness ??? We are extremely proud to work with SAFE, @austintxgov, @civilitude, @huoarchitcts, and many other partners that helped us get to this point to help Stop Abuse For Everybody.

Last week, Capital A Housing principal Conor Kenny spoke at the US Housing Conference and and Community Development Expo in Dallas. The panel titled Architectural Design in Affordable Housing discussed the intersection of design and development in affordable housing, and how design contributes to the success of those projects. Speaking on nonprofit partnerships, Conor commented, “Building in partnership with established nonprofits is great because they can put together focus groups of folks from the population we want to serve. For example, domestic violence survivors who often have small children, want the soaking tub more than anything. (This way) we were able to redesign the bathrooms to add the soaking tubs and more deeply accommodate the population we are serving.”

Thanks so much to all who came to Austin for the YIMBYtown conference in February. As a sponsor, we were delighted to see so many passionate individuals visit Austin in the pursuit of abundant housing across the US. Principal Conor Kenny moderated the "Sidewalks: Street Trees and Slow Streets" which included Director of Urban Design Kevin Howard and discussed systemic barriers on designing streets for people, street trees, and best practices for design. Congratulations to Kevin Howard on his two-year anniversary as Director of Urban Design! Kevin has made significant contributions to projects like Seabrook Square, the Green Streets Initiative, and collaborations with Urbsworks on small-town planning projects in the northwest. Kevin says that "If I had to go back and give my younger self advice, I would say to slow down, work smarter, and seek out mentors and role models in my field." Thank you for all of your invaluable work Kevin, we have been so lucky to watch you grow!
