Guiding refugees and immigrants in the journey toward self-determination and social equality.
关于我们
CAPI USA, originally called The Centre for Asian and Pacific Islanders was founded in 1982 by a coalition of church groups helping refugees arriving from Southeast Asia in the aftermath of the Vietnam conflict. Since then our services have expanded towards refugees and immigrants arriving from East Africa, Nepal, Burma, and many other countries around the world. We exist to guide refugees and immigrants in their journey toward self-determination and social equality with assistance from a diverse, multi-lingual and caring staff committed to holistic, affirming services to help people of all nationalities adapt, lead successful and productive lives, and give back to our Twin Cities regional community.

Originally, I was planning on a celebratory post announcing the continued progress we are making on our building expansion at CAPI USA - Immigrant Opportunity Center. However, after watching the Presidential Address to Congress, I now have many other feelings that I have to get off my chest. I am horrified by what was conveyed tonight and the deeply negative portrayal of our immigrant communities. Emotions were manipulated and tragic stories of murder were used to incite “righteous” anger. Terms like "savage", "dangerous", and "criminals" were repeatedly used, along with references to "rounding them up", reducing their humanity, dignity, and value. Fear and danger were glorified. My heart feels incredibly heavy at the moment, and I fear for my community and our society as a whole. At one point, Trump likened his deportation plan to the deportations that occurred under former President Eisenhower, which was a mass deportation plan that removed over 1 million Mexican immigrants, including naturalized citizens, using militarized force and rounding up individuals by the masses (https://lnkd.in/desbX_aa). This part of our history should be shameful, not celebrated. No matter your political affiliation, we can agree that immigrants make our economy stronger. They come to the USA to find opportunity, safety, and freedom. They share the beauty of their culture and weave a tapestry of sights, smells, sounds, and tastes to an otherwise bland cloth. I am honored to be an immigrant and to lead an organization like CAPI, whose mission is guiding immigrants and refugees on their journey to self-determination and social equality. And I am so excited to see how this building project can contribute to the creativity, resilience, and prosperity of our community. ???

Some of our phenomenal CAPI team members enjoying the Minnesota Hmong Chamber of Commerce Gala!
Last night at the Minnesota Hmong Chamber of Commerce Gala, I was inspired by the Hmong people's profound resilience, rich history, and vibrant culture. Their journey in the U.S. began 50 years ago, and their progress is remarkable! Minnesota now boasts the largest Hmong representation in state legislation, with 9 Senators. I aspire for my own community to one day celebrate similar milestones, reflecting on our achievements while looking forward to a thriving future. Until then, I am fully embracing each opportunity and day in the beautiful Minnesota, the place I've proudly called home for the past 6 years. No matter what the future holds, the experiences I've gained here will always remain with me. Thank you CAPI USA - Immigrant Opportunity Center for the amazing opportunities you gave me! It is always a pleasure to be out in the community sharing our work and connecting with people with the same values than us! Mary Niedermeyer we missed you!!! And a lot of people said Hi to Mary! She is the best ??
