Ever wondered what to do when the Institutional Review Board (IRB) says "no" to your recruitment plan? Drs. Camille Nebeker, Barton Palmer, Edwin Boudreaux Mhd Rahmoun, M.D. Denise Dunlap Sarah Arias, and Gwyneth E. Gould of the CAPES ELSI Unit and Jaspr Health teams worked with our UMass Chan Medical School IRB to unpack the ethics of recruiting patients admitted to the emergency department to participate in #suicideprevention #research. This article describes the process of evaluating possible risks to patients who were assigned to a hallway bed and eligible to participate in a #digitalhealth research study. Threats to patient privacy were evaluated and risk mitigation strategies explored and tested. The IRB reviewed this evidence and granted approval for patients to be recruited while being treated in hallway beds, with safety and confidentiality procedures in place. Suicide is a leading cause of death in the US and suicide prevention research is needed. It's important for researchers to work with their IRB to advance important health research. On today's Meet the CAPES Faculty, we introduce Dr. Rundensteiner! Dr. Rundensteiner is the William Smith Dean's Professor, Computer Science and Founding Head of Data Science and of Artificial Intelligence at WPI. She is a Co-Lead of the LEMURS project within CAPES with Dr. Katie Dixon-Gordon. She is passionate about applying innovative data-driven technologies to accelerate the digital transformation of solving mental-health illnesses in healthcare settings. She has successfully led more than 55 extramural studies with well over $20 million in funding focused on data-intensive technology development for challenging data-centric application problems from mental health screening, adverse event detection, data modeling of infection spread, data integration for clinical decision making, machine learning for screening for ailments, and AI for electronic health record data. Specific to CAPES, she has developed mental health screening solutions using Artificial Intelligence and deep learning that leverage smartphone data including voice, text messages, GPS, and social media. Her research resulted in the development of the EMU screening app, which is used within LEMURS. EMU will be deployed and studied for its accelerated adoption as evidence-based screening solution of suicide ideation and behavior risk to support vulnerable communities in particular students on a college campus.
