Ever wondered what to do when the Institutional Review Board (IRB) says "no" to your recruitment plan? Drs. Camille Nebeker, Barton Palmer, Edwin Boudreaux Mhd Rahmoun, M.D. Denise Dunlap Sarah Arias, and Gwyneth E. Gould of the CAPES ELSI Unit and Jaspr Health teams worked with our UMass Chan Medical School IRB to unpack the ethics of recruiting patients admitted to the emergency department to participate in #suicideprevention #research. This article describes the process of evaluating possible risks to patients who were assigned to a hallway bed and eligible to participate in a #digitalhealth research study. Threats to patient privacy were evaluated and risk mitigation strategies explored and tested. The IRB reviewed this evidence and granted approval for patients to be recruited while being treated in hallway beds, with safety and confidentiality procedures in place. Suicide is a leading cause of death in the US and suicide prevention research is needed. It's important for researchers to work with their IRB to advance important health research. Welcome to Today's *Meet the Faculty* with Dr. Camille Nebeker! Dr. Nebeker is a Professor with the UC San Diego Design Lab and the Herbert Wertheim School of Public Health and Human Longevity Science. She directs the UC San Diego Research Ethics Program and the ReCODE Health center. The ReCODE Health group conducts empirical research to guide ethical practices in health research that involves pervasive sensors, mobile apps, social media, and machine learning/AI. She applies a human centered design approach to shape ethical research practices (e.g., risk assessment, informed consent, return of results), which has led to development of decision support tools (see: Digital Health Checklist and Framework on the CAPES Digital Health Resources page on our website here https://buff.ly/WxSCulz). Read more about the ELSI Unit here and if you are CAPES faculty, request a consult with the ELSI Unit https://buff.ly/HFiemWd Read more about Dr. Nebeker's work here:

On Today's Meet the Faculty, we introduce Dr. Wenjun Li. Dr. Li is a Collaborator on the TIPS (Telehealth to Improve the Prediction of Suicide) Project. Dr. Wenjun Li holds a PhD in Biostatistics and Epidemiology, and is a Professor of Public Health (Biostatistics) at UMass Lowell. Dr. Li’s lab conducts NIH- and state-funded population health and clinical studies. He has substantial experience and is well-published in research on racial/ethnic and sex disparities in health, health behaviors and health care. He has long term research expertise in substance use epidemiology and intervention studies, patient reported outcomes after total joint replacement, musculoskeletal conditions, healthy aging, physical activity, mobility, accidental falls, and mental health issues in older adults.
