Captured by Capella 9 in Spotlight mode, this SAR image of Geam?na Lake in Romania reveals a unique, haunting beauty. Once a quiet village, Geam?na was intentionally flooded in the 1970s with toxic mining waste, creating this strikingly colorful but hazardous lake. Geam?na Lake’s toxic waters are continuously rising, submerging nearby land and what’s left of the village. With SAR, we uncover hidden details and new perspectives on sites like Geam?na. Our engineering team is exploring groundbreaking Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) technology on our small sats – introducing one of our first interferograms acquired by C-13! We chose Paris, France, for this exciting pilot. The setup? We collected two consecutive acquisitions with a 3-day temporal baseline. Thanks to performing repeat groundtrack orbit-maintenance maneuvers, a perpendicular baseline of just 76 m could be achieved. The interferometric phase, a magnitude sensitive to topographic variations, has been cyclically color-coded, exhibiting a clear dependence over the most distinctive symbol of Paris: the Eiffel Tower. Why It Matters: Interferometry powers high-precision applications, from tracking millimeter-scale ground shifts (think dam monitoring and earthquake analysis) to mapping heights of vertical structures like buildings, fences, or even coal piles for the commodities industry. This insight is crucial for government and commercial customers looking to understand the terrain for infrastructure, flyability, and more. Thanks to Néstor Yagüe Martínez for heading this InSAR project! Curious about where Capella's SAR tech can take you? Capella CEO Frank Backes?shares an important perspective in SpaceNews?on proposed U.S. export regulations for commercial SAR technology and the implications for American leadership in space.? ? Drawing parallels to a pivotal decision made 40 years ago with GPS, Frank argues that enabling U.S. companies to compete at current global standards (1,200 MHz) would strengthen our technological edge while serving both commercial and national security interests. Just as GPS became the global gold standard after being opened for civilian use, American SAR technology has the potential to set new benchmarks for Earth observation – but only if we create the right policy environment.? ? To lead the next wave of space-based radar, U.S. must learn from GPS success

In 2004, Malcolm Gladwell explored the “Picture Problem” in The New Yorker, recounting a story from the Gulf War. The U.S. Air Force used advanced infrared cameras to hunt Scud missiles, confident that their high-tech imagery would pinpoint targets. But when the dust settled, the reality was sobering: despite clear pictures, the number of confirmed Scud kills was zero. The issue? The images lacked context. Pilots faced uncertain targets, and in the chaos of night operations, even the best camera couldn’t distinguish a Scud launcher from a decoy. As Gladwell observed, “You can build a high-tech camera...but the system works only if the camera is pointed in the right place, and even then the pictures are not self-explanatory.” Interpretation was the true challenge—pictures promise clarity but often don’t tell the whole story. At Capella Space, we’re solving the Picture Problem. Our SAR technology doesn’t just take pictures; it transforms data into actionable insights, offering clarity where traditional methods often fall short. SAR can see through darkness and all weather, making it possible to monitor changes on Earth with unique precision. By turning raw data into insights, we bridge the gap between what we see and what we understand. See the data behind our images at https://hubs.la/Q02XDQxY0 #CapellaSpace #SAR #SpaceTech
