CAPE Employee Spotlight | Carson Bechtel, PE, CEM. Raised in Pocatello, Idaho before attending Montana Tech (*check out his research in the link below!), Carson recently relocated to Oahu, Hawaii. He has a passion for extreme sports, fitness, and the outdoors—enjoying skiing, surfing, hiking, and yoga. His respect for nature and a commitment to leaving places better than they were found led him naturally to a career in environmental engineering. As a Project Engineer at CAPE, Carson combines his passion for science and hands-on work with a team whose mission of protecting and improving our environment for future generations aligns with his values. Caron’s favorite project was his graduate thesis testing drinking water filtration membranes grown using kombucha symbiotic cultures of bacteria and yeast (SCOBYs), discovering that not only was their manufacture sustainable, inexpensive, and widely accessible, but also finding that they clogged less rapidly than comparable commercial membranes. They have the potential to bring cleaner drinking water to the parts of the world that need it the most.
