We have enjoyed working with our first group of students in the Eva Stitt School for Newcomers! These young people are working on completing a secondary diploma in Spanish! These students come twice a week for Spanish and once a week to focus on their academic classes. Current students, including some not pictured, hail from Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador. We look forward to helping them achieve their career goals and build solid futures for themselves and their families! We are grateful to Ramsey Church and Super Radiator Coils for providing space for them to learn with us! If you would like to learn more about our programs, please reach out to [email protected]!

Turner from Capaz+IT and our speaker via video, Behavioral Health Interpreter Training (BHIT) graduate Cynthia Palomino, delivered an insightful presentation about how to build a public/private partnership to deliver the BHIT program as an Integrated Education and Training (IET) program. Thanks to the folks at VAACE for this opportunity and the many informative sessions that broadened our understanding of adult education in Virginia. Great turnout at Family Futures tonight!! Family Futures career literacy facilitators dinorah rios , Diego M Alvarez and Maria Romina Gutierrez Perez helped participants navigate online learning platforms, learn about the healthcare system in the US, and even made a cogent connection between meditative breathing and career growth. Participants came from many countries including, Colombia, Bolivia, Honduras, Guatemala, Mexico, Brazil and Venezuela! They will spend the next twelve weeks building core literacy skills, learning about healthcare career opportunities, expanding their digital skills and working on their English. A huge thanks to our friends at Ramsey Church for providing this space so close to our community!

These students are from all around the world and live throughout Greater Richmond. The partnership with CCPS means this program is an IET program that leads straight to a career. By working with CCPS, we are able to expand access to the course through the inclusion of an academic support specialist. We are looking forward to leading a session at the Virginia Association for Adult and Continuing Education's Annual Conference on how this award-winning partnership took shape and how we can help regional partners create similar programs throughout the state! Stay tuned for more!

It's been a busy week with our Family Futures program starting at Ramsey United Methodist Church and our ESL program kicking off at Super Radiator Coils. We are truly excited about our new adult literacy testing applications that ensure programs meet participants where they are academically and set them off on pathways that lead as efficiently as possible to meaningful careers! While our ESL Program Coordinator, Matt Domer, began instruction, co-founders Dilshad Charania and Spencer L. Turner had interesting conversations with students from China, Mexico, Vietnam, Cambodia and Afghanistan while assessing their proficiency levels. There are some amazing folks with amazing stories out there! It's an honor to be a part of building their English skills so they can leverage their experiences on our behalf, building resilient, respectful communities of compassion and growth.
