Today we want to highlight one of our clients, DC's Open Goal Project. We think the way they tackle access, leadership, and equity for their players is both strategic and impactful, and we're proud to be supporting them in our small way. ?
Access to reliable transportation is one of the core systemic barriers embedded within the pay-to-play youth soccer landscape. Many of the families of the student athletes we serve don't have private vehicles, which is one of the obstacles that has prevented them from engaging in competitive soccer opportunities in the past. As we have developed our DCFC program model, a key piece has been working to secure our home fields for programming from DC Department of Parks and Recreation that are within walking distance of public transportation. Even the field, change the game.

A few weeks ago our team traveled to the Bay Area and had the honor to meet up with a few of our treasured clients for our biannual team summit. The timing was really special, as our team used the time and space to reflect on the recent election results and how we can support our nonprofit and funder partners as they navigate the next few years. We visited the impressive MILPA Collective team in Watsonville (the home of super cool Martinelli apple juice, incredible humans, and some of the best breakfast tacos ever), and the beautiful retreat center run by The Ahimsa Collective in the Santa Cruz mountains, surrounded by redwoods. The work our clients do on the forefront of community support, organizing, and healing was just what we needed. We even took an afternoon to be tourists in San Francisco. It was a real treat.

This new article from the Stanford Social Innovation Review really got us thinking, particularly in light of the rise of donor advised funds as a mechanism for giving in the United States. The article highlights how wealthy individuals increasingly give through mechanisms like donor-advised funds or LLCs, which resemble institutional giving but retain personal involvement. This blurs the line between the two donor categories. Additionally, small institutional grantmakers, such as family foundations, often mirror the behavior of large individual donors, further complicating the traditional distinction between individual and institutional philanthropy. In other words, the line between individual and institutional donors may be getting even messier, particularly for high-net-worth individuals using alternative giving vehicles. In general their findings suggest that nonprofits may need varied strategies to engage donors of different sizes. That's why we work with clients to determine the right fundraising strategy for them.
