Our very own Karen Tilkin was among the ten amazing women celebrated last night at the annual “Madam President” award ceremony. It was hosted by the League of Women Voters of Tulsa. This event honors local change-makers who could be President. They were nominated because they are women who are not afraid to lead, who are willing to speak up, and who step up to serve their community. Congratulations, Karen! ?? Exciting News! ?? The office of Head Start has just awarded CAP Tulsa an additional $1.8 million annually! This incredible support will allow us to provide seats and wraparound services to over 100 three-year-olds and their families. Tulsa Educare will also receive additional funding, and we are so thrilled about the impact these awards will have on our community. “It’s a testament to the quality of both programs to receive this grant,” said George Kaiser Family Foundation Chief Program Officer Annie Van Hanken, which partners with both CAP Tulsa and Tulsa Educare as part of its emphasis on early childhood education. We welcomed over 200 wonderful volunteers to our schools today for the Tulsa Area United Way annual fall #DayofCaring! ?? This is a day when thousands of volunteers perform community service projects for nonprofit agencies throughout the Tulsa area. We are so fortunate to be one of them. At our Skelly school, WeStreet Credit Union employees volunteered their time and talents, inspiring many smiles of appreciation??. CAP Tulsa leaders started the morning with a brief overview of what our agency does and donuts. Soon after, dozens of helping hands were off to complete projects we requested help with including washing windows and organizing school libraries. Our Family Advancement team hosted a come-and-go chips and salsa party to celebrate CAP Tulsa’s ESL Program’s 10th Anniversary yesterday?? In the fall of 2014, CAP Tulsa launched a small pilot English as a Second Language (ESL) Program serving a cohort of 24 parents who wanted to learn English skills to improve communications with their child’s teacher, the doctor, and other day to day interactions. Over the next decade the program would go on to serve 500+ individuals and grow to include both in-person and virtual class offerings. Research has found that participants in CAP Tulsa’s ESL Program experience improved English language skills; increased engagement with child's teacher; lower levels of child language brokering; and reduced material hardship. We are so proud to recognize our ESL Team’s dedication to our mission of helping families succeed!
