    You’ve hired the right fractional expert, finished all of the prep work, and scheduled your all-staff meeting and introductory meetings with your key internal team members. So that means you’re ready for day one of your fractional project…right? Not quite. As you’re focused on the tasks above - all of which are certainly critical to the success of the engagement and kicking the project off on the right foot - make sure you don’t overlook access. Even if you have every other element in place, a lack of access and not enough attention to detail on logistics can slow or stall your project at the time when momentum and progress are most important. To help you ensure that your fractional expert or experts have what they need to work with your team on day one, start by answering these questions: ? Most broadly, what does your fractional expert need to integrate themselves into your workflows and organization at large? ? Will they be logging and submitting their time? ? How will they share and receive files? ? Will they be tracking changes and viewing shared documents? ? Will they need access to internal shared folders? ? Will they be using internal communications tools like Slack or Teams? ? Will they be using your organization’s email (or need an email address of their own within your domain)? ? Will the expert need access to your content management system and/or your social media accounts? ? What other custom/unique systems do you operate that the expert might need access to (i.e., log in to the back-end of your website, custom versions of software platforms, etc.)? Since every organization and fractional relationship is different, there may be questions you would add or remove from this list in your specific situation.     More than one third of American workers already participate in the Gig Economy, and those numbers continue to swell upward. The steady march of high performers and talented experts away from full-time jobs and toward fractional and freelance work will affect the future of work in a variety of ways. The most notable will be a shift in the U.S. workforce from teams composed mostly of full-time employees to blended teams (a combination of full-time, freelance and fractional team members). Many organizations are already using some version of a blended team to great effect, so the concept is not new. What’s new is the forecast that, over the next few years, more teams than not will be using a blended approach to hiring and completing projects. We will see blended teams go from an idea used by a limited pocket of progressive leaders and companies to a generally-accepted way to complete projects more quickly, make better financial and people decisions, and become more effective and profitable as a business. Even the stalwarts, those older, larger and more established institutions, will begin staffing their teams and empowering their own leaders to staff their teams with a mix of full- and part-time employees. The organizations who will be the biggest winners when the shift toward blended teams becomes the norm will be those who experiment with hiring fractional and freelance employees to build out their teams in the near term. Because the best way to learn how to most effectively integrate fractional and freelance experts into your business is by learning how it actually works within your organization. Every organization is different, and those nuances matter, as they’re part of who you are. The term blended is telling here, as it means that these hires must be looked at and treated as part of the team. That means hiring a fractional expert instead of a full-time employee in certain scenarios, bringing on a freelancer to split tasks with in-house employees instead of only giving the freelancer the work nobody wants to do, allowing fractional leaders the flexibility and leeway to develop strategy. In other words, solving many of the same business challenges in a different way.     When’s the last time you thought about what the best version of your team looked like? As business owners, it’s easy to focus much more heavily on filling the team needs we have right now and in the near future. “If this person leaves, I’ll need to backfill that role (or maybe choose not to backfill it).” “I need more skills in this role than we have now, so I may need to replace that person or bring in someone at a higher level.” “We don’t have anyone with X skill and we need that skill set to fulfill a strategic priority.” All of these and more are important to consider, and they are all also focused on individuals vs. a team. So, if the stars aligned and you could get everything you want, what would that perfect team look like? I’ve found this to be such a valuable thought experiment (both for Canopy Advisory Group and in working with our clients), as it helps broaden the view into what’s truly needed and what’s possible. Perhaps most importantly, it forces the staffing and hiring conversation into a more strategic realm. To build your best team, you need to understand exactly where your organization is today, where it’s going, and how you plan to get there. From there, building the best team possible is about understanding the competencies you need, when you need them, and what you can afford. Using this lens, setting aside all of the other sources of value of a blended team, the concept is simply more practical than attempting to carry all staff as full-time employees. Beyond the financial strain, it makes less sense for the seasonality most organizations face and less sense for the types of expertise you truly need to execute on your plans. Experts aren’t cheap, and they shouldn’t be; the only way for many businesses to afford them is through fractional and freelance engagements (which are, of course, also better for the employees themselves). Set aside some time and set aside the obstacles that are stopping you from building your best team, and work on mapping out what it looks like. The answer might be more attainable than you think.
