Today is World Mental Health Day. As a firm, we are focused on designing for mental wellbeing in all spaces, not just healthcare buildings. Most moments of crisis don't occur within hospital walls. To us, designing for mental wellbeing means we must shift our focus beyond treatment spaces alone and expand our line of sight towards prevention. We must consider mental health within all the places we live, learn, work, play and care. Recently, our Stephanie Vito, AIA, ACHA and Marisa Nemcik, AIA NCARB WELL AP led a webinar that illustrated ways a three-dimensional ecosystem of wellness can shift the conversation from treatment of mental health issues to one of prevention on college campuses in particular. Our team was honored to be at the ribbon cutting and grand opening of the UC Health Emergency Preparedness and and Response Center (EPRC) yesterday, a space to support the adjacent world-class Emergency Department. Funded fully by federal, state and local entities, the EPRC is a one-of-a-kind space that can easily expand or contract to accommodate anything from a community recognition ceremony to a mass casualty situation to another pandemic or infectious disease scenario.?It also allows UC Health to safely handle crises while still letting the main Emergency Department function normally.
