The largest network of climate NGOs in the Eastern Europe, Caucasus and Central Asia (EECCA) region

关于我们

We are the largest network of climate NGOs in the Eastern Europe, Caucasus and Central Asia (EECCA) region. Our network has existed since 2008 and it is part of the Climate Action Network International, which brings together more than 1 900 civil society organizations in 130 countries. At the moment, 53 member NGOs in 11 countries of the region (Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Russia, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Ukraine) are members of the network. We are working to ensure that the civil society of the region is strong and organized, that the EECCA countries implement policies leading to climate neutrality and a green economy, and that there is coherence between the first and second processes based on climate justice.

  • ?? Too Slow, Too Costly, Too Risky! At COP29, the emphasis on nuclear energy as a climate solution is growing, with new countries joining the movement for massive expansion. Armenia, Kazakhstan, Moldova and Ukraine have already joined the Declaration during to triple global nuclear capacity by 2050. However, civil society warns of delays, high costs, and serious environmental and geopolitical risks. ?? We cannot afford to lose another couple of decades on nuclear investments. The public budgets of the EECCA countries should prioritize energy efficiency measures and deployment of renewable energy. ?? • ?? From Coal to Renewables: Why Gas is Not the Answer to the Climate Crisis ? Fossil gas isn’t a solution to the climate crisis; it’s fueling it. During COP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan, the action “Gas is Not a Transitional Fuel” sent a strong message: it’s time to phase out all fossil fuels, including natural gas, to protect our planet and build a sustainable future. ? Why Gas is NOT the Answer: 1?? Methane Problem: Natural gas is primarily methane—a greenhouse gas 84 times more potent than CO? over 20 years. Methane leaks happen at all stages of gas production and transportation, often unnoticed. Super leaks, like the catastrophic one in Kazakhstan last year, show the massive environmental cost of gas reliance. 2?? Transport and Emissions: To export gas as LNG (liquefied natural gas), enormous energy is burned, releasing even more emissions. The LNG transportation process also leaks methane, adding to the damage. 3?? Gas is Fuelling War: Dependency on gas finances conflicts, including Russia’s war in Ukraine. By transitioning away from fossil fuels, countries can weaken economies dependent on fossil fuel exports and promote peace. 4?? False Compromises: Switching from coal to gas isn’t progress—it delays renewable energy adoption and locks us into harmful fossil fuel dependence. Direct investment in renewable energy is the only sustainable path forward. ?? The call is clear: prioritize renewable energy and energy efficiency over false compromises. Together, we can tackle the climate crisis and secure a future for generations to come. • ?? Here it is, the first week of COP29 has passed. The Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention brought together more than 75,000 delegates representing over 190 countries. It was a busy and interesting week. The coolest thing is that experts and activists from EECCA countries managed to gather. They demonstrated the diversity of climate challenges and solutions in the region of Eastern Europe, Caucasus and Central Asia. Side events touched upon key topics such as equitable climate approaches, climate change adaptation, youth engagement and integration of just transition principles. ?? In addition to the official events, the meeting with members of the CAN EECCA network was of particular value. We summarized the first week of COP29 and discussed our impressions. But most importantly, the network members were able to get to know each other, discuss joint plans and future activities. ?? Another week of COP29 is ahead. There will be important side events, meetings and discussions. And we are looking forward to key decisions. #COP29 #EECCA
