At 13-years-old Wesley Warren watched his mom battle breast cancer. At 20-years-old, he lost her to the disease. Then the curveball Wes never saw coming … another breast cancer diagnosis. This time it was his dad. You read that right. Men get breast cancer too. And in Wes’ family, it happened to the man who had to say goodbye to his life partner, who died from the same disease. As a man who’s experienced breast cancer’s impact from both sides - losing his mother and then supporting his father through diagnosis - Wes will do whatever he can to improve the lives of everyone touched by cancer. He doesn’t want anyone to go through the same experiences he went through. This deeply personal connection to cancer’s impact drives Wes’s dedication to our mission fund breast cancer vaccine clinical trials. Our current breast cancer treatments — chemotherapy, radiation, surgery — they’ve saved countless lives including our Cancer Vaccine Coalition founder. ?? And while we are deeply grateful for that, we can’t help but ask ourselves: isn’t it time for something better? Over 6 million women watching Sunday’s Super Bowl may be diagnosed with breast cancer. When we saw that on the @_yourattentionplease_ ad it didn’t shock us. We know the reality first hand. It did get us thinking of the other statistics, the women, & the diagnoses behind the numbers. ?? 1 in 8 women in the U.S. will get diagnosed with breast cancer. You know them. You may love one. Here’s what you may not know: ??20-30% of early stage breast cancer returns as metastatic. That means even when we catch it early we are not always “in the clear.” ??~114 women are still dying from breast cancer in the US every single day. At Cancer Vaccine Coalition we advocate for early detection. It DOES save lives. It DOES make treatment an easier path for some. It’s why we are working with the Breast Cancer Early Detection Coalition. It is important. BUT, what if we had a 1, 2 punch????? ?? More & better screening followed by VACCINES for those diagnosed. Treatment vaccines train your body to recognize a cancer cell & get rid of it. This could shrink or eliminate disease then PREVENT RECURRENCE. We need to help current patients catch it early, then KNOCK CANCER OUT (to steal another amazing Superbowl commercial tagline). This type of vaccine is not a pipe dream. ??The science is here. ??The research is ongoing. ??The time is now. Breast (and other) cancer vaccines could be the cancer breakthrough we all want & need.
